NEW YORK - After headlining what was a commanding performance for the Seton Hall swimming & diving squad last weekend, freshman Noah Yanchulis (Arnold, Md.) has been named BIG EAST Men's Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week it was announced by the conference office on Tuesday afternoon.
Yanchulis is the second consecutive Pirate to earn the distinction after senior diver Ben Mitchell (Milford, Pa.) was tabbed for the second time this season following a school-record breaking effort in a rout of conference rival Providence.
After moving past the Friars, The Hall was faced with a tri-meet against two more league foes in Georgetown and Villanova. With Yanchulis helping to lead the way, the Pirates were once again thoroughly dominant - winning 13 events over two days to improve to 7-1 this fall with a sweep of the Hoyas (222-131) and Wildcats (245-102).
The Arnold, Md. native was the unquestioned standout of the meet in the pool, doubling his season win total with four individual victories. In what may have been the most impressive performance in the conference this season, the freshman posted the top time in the league to this point in the season in the 200-IM (1:55.73), 400-IM (4:07.48) and 200-free (1:42.84) while also adding a first-place finish in the 500-free with a time of 4:44.23 that currently ranks second in the BIG EAST.
The impressive showing came on the heels of a home debut where he earned top honors in the 200-free and 100-fly. Yanchulis was also the only Seton Hall male swimmer to record an individual win at the Loyola (MD) Quad meet after picking up his first collegiate victory in the 200-fly during the opener at Montclair State.
As a team, the Seton Hall men currently hold the top time in the conference in 10 different swimming events - including each of the four fastest 100-breast marks - and both diving events as the Pirates look to add to the three titles the squad collected in the first season of the BIG EAST as it currently stands.
Both the Seton Hall men's and women's swimming & diving teams will be off from competition this weekend before wrapping up the fall over three days at the Patriot Invitational hosted by George Mason.
