SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Seton Hall junior Sterling Gibbs (Scotch Plains, N.J.) was named BIG EAST Player of the Week on Monday.
It's the second straight week he's been honored by the conference to start the season, as he was named to the Weekly Honor Roll last week.
Gibbs put together one of the finest single-game performances in Seton Hall history vs. Illinois State in the Paradise Jam championship game on Monday. The point guard scored a career-high 40 points on 10-for-14 shooting from the field, including 7-for-9 from three-point range. Gibbs was also a remarkable 13-for-13 from the free throw line in Seton Hall's 84-80 victory. Gibb's 40-point outburst is the highest point total for a Pirate since Jeremy Hazell scored 41 vs. West Virginia on Dec. 26, 2009. It's also only the 12th game of 40 or more points in Seton Hall history. For his efforts, Gibbs was named the Paradise Jam Most Valuable Player. On Saturday vs. George Washington, Gibbs scored 11 points and was 6-for-6 from the free-throw line in Seton Hall's four-point victory.
Gibbs' exploits have helped Seton Hall run its record to a perfect 5-0. The Pirates' Paradise Jam title was the team's first traditional eight-team in-season tournament championship since winning the Great Alaskan Shootout in 1988.
Marquette's Duane Wilson was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week. Members of the Weekly Honor Roll include Butler's Kellen Dunham, DePaul's Myke Henry, Georgetown's D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera, St. John's D'Angelo Harrison and Villanova's Dylan Ennis.
Gibbs and the rest of the Pirates will return to action tomorrow night when they host Mount St. Mary's at the Prudential Center. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast live via Fox Sports 2, and on radio stations AM970 and WSOU FM.
