SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Seton Hall freshman Isaiah Whitehead (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week on Monday for a second straight time. Junior Sterling Gibbs (Scotch Plains, N.J.) was named to the Weekly Honor Roll.
Whitehead didn't look like a rookie in one of the most-inhospitable environments in the nation for opposing teams at Wichita State on Tuesday. The BIG EAST Preseason Rookie of the Year led all scorers with 23 points, including 4-for-7 shooting from three-point range. Whitehead also had four rebounds and two assists in 27 minutes. On Sunday, although he had an off-shooting performance, he dished out three assists and pulled down a career-high eight rebounds in an easy victory over Saint Peter's.
Gibbs scored 19 points and dished out four assists at #11 Wichita State on Tuesday. The Pirates' point guard followed up that performance with 12 points and three assists vs. Saint Peter's on Sunday. Gibbs entered the week leading the BIG EAST and ranking 10th in the nation in three-point percentage and went 7-for-11 from long distance in the two games last week.
St. John's D'Angelo Harrison was named BIG EAST Player of the Week for a second straight time. Those joining Gibbs on the Honor Roll include Creighton's Austin Chatman, St. John's Rysheed Jordan, Villanova's Josh Hart and Xavier's Dee Davis.
Whitehead, Gibbs and the rest of the Pirates will return to action on Thursday, Dec. 18 when they travel to the University of South Florida. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast live via CBS Sports Network, and on radio stations AM970 and WSOU FM.
