NEW YORK - Seton Hall men's basketball freshman Angel Delgado (Bajos de Haina, Dominican Republic), behind a solid effort on both ends of the floor last Saturday vs. Maine, has been named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week, the conference office announced Monday. In addition, junior Sterling Gibbs (Scotch Plains, N.J.) was placed on the BIG EAST Honor Roll for the third time this season.
Delgado's honor marks the third time this season that a Pirate has captured the Rookie of the Week honor. Fellow freshman Isaiah Whitehead (Brooklyn, N.Y.) earned the award on Dec. 8 and Dec. 15.
Delgado was solid in Seton Hall's 72-43 win over Maine last Saturday at Walsh Gymnasium. He posted 10 points, grabbed six rebounds and blocked a career-high four shots. He now has grabbed six rebounds and blocked at least one shot in 11 of 12 games this season. And he was a big reason why Seton Hall limited Maine to 43 points, a season-low for a Pirates opponent.
For the season, Delgado is averaging 8.6 points, 8.8 rebounds and 1.6 blocks.
Gibbs was efficient last Saturday, making seven of his 10 shot attempts, including three of five from three-point range, to finish with a game-high 18 points in the win over Maine. It was the sixth time this season Gibbs has scored 15 or more points in a game and the seventh time he's made at least 50 percent of his shot attempts. He also added five assists on the day, marking the sixth time he's produced four or more assists in a game.
Gibbs continues to display his sharpshooting abilities from three-point range as he now is 27-for-53 (.509) there this season. For the year, he is averaging a team-best 15.6 points, 3.3 assists and 1.3 steals.
Seton Hall finished its non-conference schedule with a 10-2 record, including a Paradise Jam tournament title, a strong resume-building win over George Washington and a convicing victory over Rutgers in the inaugural Garden State Hardwood Classic. The Pirates now turn their attention to BIG EAST play as they host St. John's Wednesday at Prudential Center at noon. The game is the opener of the BIG EAST New Year's Eve Marathon on Fox Sports 1 and the Fox Sports Go app.
