ANNAPOLIS, MD. - The Seton Hall tennis team squared off with its first BIG EAST opponent of the spring on Saturday but could not get past #45 DePaul in dual match action at the U.S. Naval Academy.
The Pirates (3-3) - who saw their own three-match winning streak come to an end on Friday - fell 7-0 to a Blue Demons (11-1) squad that picked up its 10th-consecutive victory, and its fourth-straight of the shutout variety.
DePaul took control early with wins at #2 and #3 doubles, taking a 1-0 lead into singles play after the #1 doubles match was stopped short of its conclusion with Rocio Portela (Demetrio Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) and Chloe Sher (Tin Shui Wai, Hong Kong) up 5-4 on Patricia Fargas and Ana Vladutu.
Zaina Sufi topped sophomore Julia Keenan (Greenland, N.H.) at the fourth position to extend the gap to 2-0 and the Blue Demons quickly followed with victories at #5 and #3 to clinch the win.
After DePaul added another point by prevailing in sixth singles, matches in the top two spots were yet to be decided. Up against Fargas, the sixth-ranked player in the Midwest region according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), Sher rebounded from a slow start to challenge in the second set. Sher dropped the first 6-2, then settled in and forced the second to a 12th game, ultimately falling 7-5.
Fargas entered the day a winner of four consecutive matches; holding a 6-3 record at the #1 position.
Sophomore Hannah Liljekvist (Djursholm, Sweden) battled Jasmin Kling throughout their second singles matchup, threatening Kling's eight-match unbeaten streak.
Liljekvist came up just short in the first as Kling claimed the set via tiebreak and went on to take four of the first nine games in the second before the DePaul junior and former BIG EAST Freshman of the Year was able to emerge victorious.
The Blue Demons are the top ranked team in the conference and previously blanked Georgetown on Friday. Their lone loss came in January at then-#7 Texas A&M.
Next up for The Hall is a trip to take on in-state foe Princeton on Friday, February 28. Start-time is set for 5:00 p.m. from Jadwin Gym.
