MONTCLAIR, N.J. - Seton Hall men's basketball junior guard Sterling Gibbs (Scotch Plains, N.J.) served as a special guest at the Write on Sports (WOS) camp Monday at Montclair State University. The Write on Sports (WOS) program was founded in 2005 by former Sports Editor and senior executive of the Associated Press Byron Yake. In the formal 10 minute interview with Popkin, Gibbs discussed a variety of topics such as the influence his older brother Ashton Gibbs, a former All-BIG EAST guard at Pitt, has had on his basketball career. The Scotch Plains, N.J. native also encouraged the campers to believe in their abilities and work hard to achieve their dreams. Throughout the session, Popkin elaborated on best interview practices and emphasized the importance of preparation.
"It was an honor to assist with the Write on Sports camp and work with such an enthusiastic group of kids," said Gibbs. "I look forward to opportunities like this where I can have a positive impact on the young people in our community who are striving to accomplish great things."
WOS is a non-profit organization that offers a tuition-free program focused on educating youth on journalism through after-school programs and summer camps. WOS aims to teach students the fundamentals of good journalism and provide outlets for them to engage with sports professionals applying with they have learned.
Seton Hall women's basketball senior guard Ka'Deidre Simmons (Newark, N.J.) has also been a guest at the Write on Sports. On Thursday, she interviewed with Gannett New Jersey sports reporter Jerry Carino before a group of middle schoolers at Roselle Catholic High School.
