This past April 30th, Pirate Blue Athletic Fund held its annual Donor Matching Day. Pirate Blue reached its overarching goal of receiving donations from supporters in all 50 states in order to meet the challenge, of one generous anonymous donor who contributed $50,000 for the achievement. In total, Pirate Blue raised over $193,000 from over 450 alumni, family, and friends of the program throughout the day.
Due to the success of Donor Matching Day and the overwhelming support of Pirates fans across the country, Pirate Blue will profile some of those loyal supporters from coast to coast who helped make Donor Matching Day a success.
Our next profile is of Pirate Blue donor Paul Huether ('82) who has been donating to Pirate Blue since 2007. Paul lives nearly 3,000 miles away in Las Vegas, but remains a passionate fan of SHU Athletics. He has witnessed some great, early BIG EAST beginnings during his college years at the Hall, but envisions exciting things to come for the new BIG EAST and Seton Hall. Paul recently caught up with Pirate Blue as a feature of "HALL Around the Nation".
Q: Where do you currently live and what is your current occupation?
Huether:I have lived in Las Vegas since 1994 and am Executive Vice President/ Chief Financial officer of Go Wireless, Inc, a wireless retailer with 350 stores in 27 states. Married to Denise, with my daughter Melissa starting Law School at Loyola in Los Angeles in August and my son Paul entering his second year at University of San Diego
Q: What year did you graduate from Seton Hall?
Huether:I graduated SHU in 1982
Q: Can you share one of your most memorable experiences as a Seton Hall student?
Huether: Many great games that were played at Walsh in the late 1970-early 1980's , but I think going to Georgetown and beating the Hoyas at their home court was great. About 5 loyal SHU fans out cheered the entire Georgetown fan base and after we won, the entire team and about 100 Georgetown fans came up to us and said we showed them how a few loyal fans made all the difference in how a team played and they wished they had some fans show the same support.
Q: What are you most proud of as a Seton Hall fan?
Huether:Seton Hall is known across the country for its academics and athletics, but I am most proud of how we handled the loss In the 1989 championship game. Like Mother Seton herself, we handled it with class.
Q: Why did you choose to donate to Pirate Blue?
Huether: It is important to give back to whatever endeavor you choose. I believe that it is important to show our support to the common thread that has connected many of us which is Seton Hall. Some of my best friends and people that I have reached out to in Business in the investment banking community share the common love of SHU sports, and it is critical to show our support without being able to attend games because of geography do so in a meaningful way, which is through Pirate Blue.
Q: What would you say to a friend who was considering joining the Pirate Blue Athletic Fund?
Huether: Athletics help raise the image and recognition of the entire school, and any donation that you can make to assist the promotion of the entire university is greatly appreciated. There are no donations too small that won't at least in some way help foster future success .
