ITHACA, N.Y. - February has proven to be a busy month in re-shuffling the Seton Hall record board and Wednesday was no different; as sophomores Melody Bush (Guelph, Ontario) and Tessa Lindner (Sun Prairie, Wisc.) combined with junior Megan Mallon (Glen Mills, Pa.) and freshman Kat Carson (Katy, Texas) to highlight day one for The Hall at the 2015 BIG EAST Championships with a standard-setting showing in the 200-medley relay.
Bush, Lindner, Mallon and Carson recorded a collective time of 1:44.46, improving upon the program record that Bush and Mallon helped establish at the 2014 championships. Seton Hall earned third-place in the event, trailing only champions Villanova (1:42.06) and Xavier (1:42.34).
Carson's anchor leg of 23.38 seconds helped SHU edge Georgetown (1:44.80) for the third spot and the Pirates finished comfortably ahead of Butler and Providence in fifth and sixth respectively.
Both Bush and Mallon were All-BIG EAST performers a year ago. On Wednesday, another All-League honoree in Cora Meehan (Noblesville, Ind.) joined with freshmen Kylene Ronayne (Springfield, Pa.) and Sam Shirtliff (Camp Hill, Pa.) as well as sophomore Erica Naumann (Middletown, Conn.) to place fourth in the 800-free relay event.
The quartet clocked in at 7:39.86, nearly 14 seconds ahead of their seed time. The Wildcats took first-place points with a 7:18.18 showing.
Through two relay events, the Pirates rank fourth with 62 points and sit just four behind second-place Xavier. Villanova jumped out to an early advantage with 80 points.
Competition for the women on day two will include the 50-free, 500-free and 200-IM individual races as well as the 200-free relay event in the pool. Female divers will kick-off their championship program with three-meter competition.
A live stream of the championships will once again be available on the BIG EAST Digital Network and FOX Sports Go. Preliminaries are scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. from the Ithaca College Athletics and Events Center Aquatics Pavilion with finals starting at 6:00 p.m.
