EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. - Juniors Julia Keenan (Greenland, N.H.) and Isabell Klingert (Oberbalbach, Germany) earned a pair of three-set victories for the Seton Hall women's tennis team at Rutgers on Wednesday but the Scarlet Knights came away with a 5-2 win.
Klingert extended her winning streak to seven for The Hall (1-4) - including all four of her dual match appearances - while Keenan picked up her first such win of 2015.
Rutgers swept all three doubles matches however and scored four singles points against a Seton Hall lineup that was without one of its usual top-two players for the second straight match.
Klingert stepped up to the fifth position and took the first set from RU's Mariam Zein, 6-1. Zein prevailed in a tightly-contested second frame, 6-4 but Klingert rallied to claim the third, 10-4 and secure the result.
In seven matches since returning to action following the winter break, Klingert has dropped a total of two sets. Her four dual matches currently stand as the top mark on the squad.
From the fourth spot, Keenan also jumped out to a one set advantage over Lindsay Balsamo by edging the Rutgers senior 7-6 (4) to open what was a back-and-forth affair. Balsamo rebounded to force a decisive frame but Keenan, the Pirates' wins leader in 2014, emerged victorious from a 13-11 third set.
Keenan and reigning BIG EAST Player of the Week Hannah Liljekvist (Djursholm, Sweden) nearly upended Zein and Gina Li, the fourth-ranked tandem in the Northeast region, from the top doubles spot but ultimately fell, 8-5.
Klingert and Marisa Quevedo (Tyler, Texas) also dropped a close decision in their #3 matchup with Farris Cunningham and Lindsey Kayati but sustained an 8-5 setback as well.
The Pirates have two matches remaining this week; first traveling to take on NJIT on Friday, February 27 before hosting Binghamton the following day. Start-time between SHU and the Highlanders is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
