SAN DIEGO - The Pirates took two of three doubles matches and juniors Julia Keenan (Greenland, N.H.) and Isabell Klingert (Oberbalbach, Germany) added singles victories but the Seton Hall tennis team came up just short against UC San Diego Wednesday, falling 5-4.
Playing for the second time in as many days as part of a three-match Spring Break trip to San Diego, The Hall (3-7) has now been just one-point shy of earning its fourth victory of the spring in each outing, dropping another 5-4 decision to Cal State-Los Angeles on Tuesday.
In doubles, Klingert and Marisa Quevedo (Tyler, Texas) combined to take down Nousha Nowamooz and Jasmine Hosseini, 8-6, at #3.
From the second position, senior Madison Shoemaker (Halfmoon Bay, British Columbia) and freshman Katie Kim (Honolulu, Hawaii) got past Nava Nowamooz and Shannon Theisen by a score of 8-5. It was the fifth victory of the spring for the tandem of Shoemaker and Kim, all of which have come in the last eight matches.
The pair of doubles wins marked the third time this season that Seton Hall has finished with an edge in doubles competition in its last five outings.
With Keenan and Klingert bouncing back from individual losses in the spring break opener, the Pirates have now had five different players post singles wins over the two-match stretch despite the transition to outdoor courts.
Klingert's victory was her team-leading 11th of 2015 as the junior returned to the dominant form that saw her open the spring with 10 consecutive victories. Up against Nousha Nowamooz at #5, Klingert yielded only one game while prevailing in straight sets.
Her performance moved The Hall ahead, 3-to-1, on the team scoreboard but UCSD claimed the next three matches to be decided to take a 4-3 advantage.
In fourth singles, Keenan leveled the score and picked up her third win in the last five outings by coming out on top in a back-and-forth battle with Nava Nowamooz. Keenan cruised to a sweep of the first set before falling in the second, 1-6. The junior needed just two games over the minimum to claim the third and decisive frame however, adding another point for SHU.
The result left the match to be decided at #6 where after jumping out to a one-set advantage over Thiesen, Shoemaker was ultimately edged in three sets.
The Pirates will wrap up the three-match swing in San Diego against Vanguard on Thursday.
