NEWARK, N.J. --The Seton Hall tennis team returned to conference play on Saturday afternoon but was unable to get past visiting St. John's in their final home match of the season, falling 7-0.
The loss was just the second for The Hall (7-9, 2-3 BIG EAST) in the last six matches while the Red Storm improved to a perfect 4-0 against league foes.
The Pirates nearly came away with the doubles point after Isabell Klingert (Oberbalbach, Germany) and Luize Strike (Riga, Latvia) opened with an 8-6 triumph over Stephanie Elgegren and Anastasia Polyakova in the third position but STJ came away with the other two matches, clinching the point by prevailing in a tiebreak at the top spot.
Junior Hannah Liljekvist (Djursholm, Sweden) paired with classmate Julia Keenan (Greenland, N.H.) to force the tiebreak in first doubles and was also one of two team members who battled back from a one-set deficit to force a decisive third frame.
Up against Anna Morozova, Liljekvist posted a 6-3 win in the second set after dropping the first, 2-6. Morozova raced to a 10-5 victory in the final set however to secure the point.
Freshman Katie Kim (Honolulu, Hawaii) also battled back from an early hole, answering Jaide Collins' 6-0 victory in the first set by taking six-of-eight games in the second. Collins rallied however to put the #6 match away by taking the third, 7-5.
Klingert sustained just her second loss in 18 appearances as an individual this spring, coming up short against Elgegren in the fifth position. It was also the first setback for Klingert in five head-to-head matches against BIG EAST foes.
The match also served as Senior Day for the Pirates as Anna Guryanova (Moscow, Russia) and Madison Shoemaker (Halfmoon Bay, British Columbia) were honored for their contributions to the program.
Seton Hall will close the regular season with two more conference matches next weekend, first traveling to take on #33 DePaul on Saturday, April 18 before closing the 18-match spring slate at Marquette the following day.
