NEW YORK -- After finishing the regular season with a 7-11 record that included a 2-5 mark in conference play, the league office announced on Monday that the Seton Hall tennis team has received the #6 seed for the 2015 BIG EAST Championship presented by New York Life.
The four-day tournament will be held at the Barbara S. Wynne Tennis Center in Indianapolis, Ind. with the conference's collection of men's and women's teams all descending upon the Hoosier State in search of a title.
Regardless of the result against St. John's, the Pirates are guaranteed to play at least two matches at the championship as the format also features a consolation bracket. Consolation matches will be held on Saturday afternoon alongside semifinal competition. The championship match is scheduled to begin at Noon on Sunday.
As the sixth seed in the 10-team field, the Pirates draw a quarterfinal matchup with a third-seeded St. John's squad that posted a 12-8 mark in the spring and went 5-1 against BIG EAST opposition; including a victory over The Hall in Queens on April 11.
This marks the second consecutive season that Seton Hall has earned an automatic berth into the quarterfinal round. Last April, junior Hannah Liljekvist (Djursholm, Sweden) tallied the team's lone point in a 4-1 loss to third-seeded Xavier before SHU closed the campaign with a shutout of Butler in the consolation round.
Top-seeded DePaul defeated Xavier to claim the conference title a year ago, blanking the Musketeers 4-to-0, and will enter the weekend as the lone nationally ranked team in the women's field.
The Pirates and Red Storm are slated to square off on Friday (4/24) at Noon. With a win, The Hall would advance to the semifinals to face either #2 Xavier or the winner of an opening round meeting between seventh-seeded Butler and #10 Villanova.
Seeds were determined by a committee that reviews each team's regular-season schedule, Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, results against BIG EAST and common non-conference opponents and wins/losses against ranked foes.
