NEW YORK - Last Friday, ESPN Events announced that the Seton Hall men's basketball team will headline the 2017 NIT Season Tip-Off Field alongside Rhode Island, Vanderbilt and Virginia. The games will take place the week of Thanksgiving 2017 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
This will be Seton Hall's fourth appearance in the NIT Season Tip-Off and the first in the tournament's recently new format that pits four top teams over two rounds -- the semifinals and the championship/third-place games. Previously, the Pirates appeared in this tournament when it was bracketed. In 1992, the Pirates reached the championship game of the tournament with wins over Delaware, Tennessee and UCLA before losing to Indiana.
The 2017 field is loaded with excellent programs that will compete with the Pirates for the championship. Rhode Island, led by head coach and Seton Hall alumnus Dan Hurley '96 has posted winning season in seven of its last 10 seasons and is currently nationally ranked. Vanderbilt won 19 games last season and earned an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament. Virginia was a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament last season and advanced to the Elite Eight.
The tournament will serve as a homecoming for Khadeen Carrington, who will be a senior next season and grew up in Brooklyn, attending Bishop Loughlin High School, which is a 10-minute walk from Barclays Center. Bronx native Desi Rodriguez, who will also be a senior next season, will also enjoy a warm homecoming as he attended Abraham Lincoln High School in Brooklyn's Coney Island neighborhood only 12 miles away.
