NEW YORK, N.Y. – Seton Hall sophomore Sammie Staudt (Coatesville, Pa.) was named BIG EAST Women's Golfer of the Week, while junior Chris Yeom (Flushing, N.Y.) earned BIG EAST Men's Golfer of the Week honors on Thursday.
It's the first time this year that Seton Hall has swept the weekly BIG EAST golf awards.
Staudt was Seton Hall's top performer at the Yale Women's Intercollegiate last weekend. The sophomore turned in a second straight impressive round on Saturday, and used a strong finish to shoot up the individual scoreboard. Staudt was 6-over-par through 13 holes, but parred holes No. 15 and No. 18, birdied holes No. 14 and No. 16, and recorded an eagle on the par-4, 17th hole. She was 4-under-par through her final five holes alone. For the day, she shot a 2-over-par, 73. For the tournament, she tied for 14th place with a 6-over-par, 75-73-148. Staudt's 6-over-par finish is a career-best.
Yeom also turned in a career-best performance earlier this week at The Health Plan Mountaineer Intercollegiate. Monday's second round was halted due to darkness and had to be finished on Tuesday, before beginning the third round. For Yeom, the result was a pair of 2-under-par, 70's, the eighth and ninth sub-par rounds of his collegiate career. Yeom's final round featured a bogey on the 11th hole, but birdies on holes No. 6, No. 12 and No. 18. He finished the tournament tied for third among 84 individual golfers with a career-low 3-under-par, 73-70-70-213. The performance is Yeom's second straight sub-par tournament, sixth career top-10 finish and second career top-5 effort.
Seton Hall's women's golf team will conclude the fall season with two rounds at the Brown Bear Invitational in Seekonk, Mass., Oct. 15-16. The men's team will play three rounds at the Georgetown Intercollegiate in Beallsville, Md., Oct. 16-17.
