No. 20 Pirates Fall One Point Short to Rhode Island
11/23/2017 9:28:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Brooklyn, N.Y. - The No. 20 Seton Hall men's basketball team clawed back from an 11-point deficit against Rhode Island to take a 74-73 lead with 21 seconds remaining, but Rams guard Jared Terrell banked a floater with 5.2 seconds to play to lift URI to a 75-74 victory over the Pirates in the semifinals of the NIT Season Tip-Off Thursday night at Barclays Center.
The Pirates will now face Vanderbilt in Friday night's third-place game, slated for a 9:45 p.m. tip-off on ESPNEWS.Â
Senior Angel Delgado (Bajos De Haina, Dominican Republic) produced his NCAA leading 54th career double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Sophomore Myles Powell (Trenton, N.J.) led the Pirates with 21 points.
Terrell led all scorers with 32 points.
Turning Point
Seton Hall struggled defensively and allowed the Rams to score 54 points in the first half. But the Pirates erased that memory with a strong second-half effort, holding the Rams to 8-for-31 shooting in the final 20 minutes, giving them the opportunity to fight back.
Trailing by nine with 9:54 to play, the Pirates went on a 13-3 run on the strength of eight points from senior Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.) to go up one, 72-71.
Both teams' offenses went stagnant from there on out with just three field goals made the rest of the way. It was senior Ismael Sanogo (Newark, N.J.) who had a put-back layup with 2:03 to play to put the Pirates on top 74-73.
The Hall continued to get defensive stops, but at the end, it was back-to-back turnovers that put the ball in URI's hands with 21 seconds remaining and a chance to win. Terrell drove to his right and threw up a floater that banked in with 5.2 seconds left. The Pirates were unable to get off a good shot in the waning moments.
Inside the Numbers
- Seton Hall shot 47.6 percent from the field (30-for-63) and was 5-for-12 (41.7 percent) from the three-point line. URI shot 42.4 percent (25-for-59), including only 25.8 percent (8-for-31) in the second half. The Rams did connect on nine three-pointers (9-for-17, 52.9 percent).
- The difference in the game may have been at the free throw line; the Rams were 16-for-17 (94.1 percent) and the Pirates were 9-for-16 (56.3 percent).
- Seton Hall again dominated the paint, outscoring the Rams down low, 44-26.Â
- The Pirates also dominated the boards, out-rebounding URI 41-31 and using 14 offensive rebounds to generate 16 second chance points.
- With his 18 points and 14 rebounds, Delgado achieved his NCAA-leading 54th career double-double and his fourth of the season.
- Powell scored 18 of his team-high 21 points in the first half. It was his fourth career 20-point effort.
- Carrington had 12 points and two assists.
- Senior Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) also delivered 12 points.
News & Notes
- Seton Hall drops to 7-2 all-time against Rhode Island. It's the first Pirates loss in the series since March 19, 2003, coincidentally enough in a Postseason NIT game and that was a one-point game too, 61-60.
- Carrington surpassed Jordan Theodore (2008-12) for 25th all-time in scoring at Seton Hall.
- Delgado is now at 1,101 rebounds for his career, only 48 shy from tying Ken House (1969-72) for third all-time in program history.
- Seton Hall is now 41-13 all-time when Delgado gets a double-double.
- The Pirates are now 146-49 all-time as an AP ranked team.
