Newark, N.J. – The Seton Hall women's tennis team evened the score after trailing by three, but ultimately suffered a 4-3 setback at NJIT Friday night at the Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility.
Freshmen Krista Cerpina (Riga, Latvia) and Anniek Jansen (Naarden, Nethlerlands) gave the Pirates (3-2) the early advantage in doubles play with a 7-5 victory in the No. 3 flight. However, NJIT (1-4) won the remaining two doubles matchups to take a 1-0 lead.
After dropping the first two singles flights, freshman Melody Taal (Ede, Netherlands) spearheaded the Seton Hall comeback effort with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles. Next, junior Luize Strike (Riga, Latvia) overcame a 6-2 deficit in the first set at No. 1 singles, and clawed back for a 7-6 (11), 7-6 (5) victory to draw within one of the lead.
Jansen earned a gritty 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 6 singles to even the match, but NJIT ultimately outlasted the Pirates with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 win in the No. 5 spot to earn the clinching point.
"Each of us needs to step up in order to bounce back and be ready for Rutgers tomorrow," said head coach Riza Zalameda. "Tonight was a great learning experience for our freshman, and we're hoping that translates for us moving forward."
Up next, the Pirates travel to Rutgers Saturday for a 6 p.m. match at East Brunswick Racquet Club.
