Morristown, N.J. – The Seton Hall women's tennis team won the first set in four different singles matches after dropping the doubles point Sunday, but was ultimately outlasted, 5-2, in a BIG EAST match against Xavier at CenterCourt Sports.
The Pirates (6-6, 1-1 BIG EAST) earned their first point of the match when sophomore Anna Fajnorova (Bratislava, Slovakia) recorded a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 2 singles over Cristina Di Lorenzo. Freshman Melody Taal (Ede, Netherlands) picked up a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory at the No. 4 flight over Rachael Reichenbach.
The defending conference champions, Xavier (8-7, 3-0 BIG EAST) used very competitive victories at the No. 1, 3, 5 and 6 flights to seal a victory.
"Every match was played so close today that the results could have gone either way," said head coach Riza Zalameda. "We had outstanding spirit and support, and did a nice job of carrying over momentum from Friday's win. After losing the doubles point today we responded by winning the first set in four different singles matches, which is a testament to our ability to rise up to the challenge. Xavier is a very talented and hard-working team, and competed with poise under pressure. We look forward to the opportunity to see them again in the conference tournament."
Looking ahead, the Pirates host non-league foe Fairfield next Sunday, April 2 at 12 p.m. inside CenterCourt Sports in Morristown.
