NEW YORK - Junior Myles Powell (Trenton, N.J.) of the Seton Hall men's basketball team has been named the BIG EAST Player of the Week for his heroics in helping the Pirates knock off No. 9 Kentucky last Saturday in the Citi Hoops Classic at Madison Square Garden, the conference office announced Monday.
Powell averaged 19.0 points and 4.0 assists in Seton Hall's 2-0 week, but it was Saturday's effort that garnered him his first career Player of the Week nod. He scored a team-high 28 points, including scoring 25 points in the second half and overtime. He made five consecutive three-pointers in the final 5:27 of the second half, including one off-balance three with 1.5 seconds remaining in regulation that temporarily put the Pirates in front before Kentucky hit a half-court shot at the buzzer to send the game to overtime. Powell hit one more three in the extra period to cap his afternoon as the Pirates stunned the nationally ranked Wildcats with an 84-83 victory.
Powell now has five 20-point games this season, including 30 and 40-point efforts, and is currently the BIG EAST Conference's leading scorer at 23.0 points per game.
Powell and the Pirates are 6-3 this season and will face Rutgers Saturday in the Garden State Hardwood Classic at Prudential Center at 2 p.m. The game is sold out, but fans can check Ticketmaster.com for secondary market options.
