MAPLEWOOD, N.J. – The Seton Hall Athletics Department honored its outgoing seniors last night at the Seventh Annual Pirate Blue Senior Awards at Maplewood Country Club. The Class of 2018 will graduate on May 21 after leaving a lasting legacy both on and off the field of play in South Orange.
The event was introduced in 2012 and aims to provide a platform to recognize the seniors from all 14 of Seton Hall's varsity athletic programs for their outstanding achievements as student-athletes in front of their coaches, teammates, family and friends. As part of the ceremony, each senior is presented with a framed jersey or sport-specific memorabilia to commemorate their experience as a Seton Hall student-athlete.
Marquee awards presented were the Senior Male and Female Athlete of the Year honors. Men's basketball standout Angel Delgado (Bajos de Haina, Dominican Republic) picked up Male Athlete of the Year honors, while women's swimming and diving's Sydney Simpson (Tallahassee, Fla.) and softball's Alexis Walkden (Cibolo, Texas) were each recognized as Female Co-Athlete of the Year. Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards went to Mike Alescio (Fair Haven, N.J.) from baseball and Katie Landes (Stony Point, N.Y.) of women's soccer.
In addition, Jeff Larson of the men's cross country team was named the Student Most Valuable Pirate Award, which highlights a senior student-athlete who has displayed leadership and dedication, and made exemplary contributions not only in the field of competition, but also in the classroom and in the Seton Hall community. Larson is a two-time Student-Athlete Advisory Committee president and has represented Seton Hall and the BIG EAST Conference on numerous national platforms.
