Seton Hall men's basketball rising sophomore Sandro Mamukelashvili (Tbliisi, Georgia) is spending his summer representing his country.
Mamukelashvili, the talented, 6-10 Pirates forward is competing for the Georgian national team this summer, specifically in two separate tournaments with the hopes of lifting the country's international profile, including the 2019 FIBAÂ Basketball World Cup Qualifiers and the FIBAÂ U20 European Championship.
Georgia is one of 32 teams currently competing in the first round of the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup Qualifiers with the ultimate goal of trying to make it to the 2019 World Cup, slated for China. Mamukelashvili and his teammates will host Serbia in Tbilisi on Friday, June 29 and then host Austria on Monday, July 2. If after those two games, Georgia is still in the top three of its group, it will advance to the second round, slated for mid-September.
After the World Cup Qualifiers, Mamukelashvili and his U20 teammates will then compete in Bulgaria at the European Championship, Division B. Georgia has drawn Group D and will face Poland on Friday, July 13, Kosovo on July 14, Finland on July 17 and Portugal on July 18. The top two teams in each of the four groups will advance to the quarterfinals with the hopes of ultimately reaching the July 22 championship game. All games are taking place in Sofia, Bulgaria.Â
Mamukelashvili appeared in all 34 games for Seton Hall during his freshman season with averages of 2.6 points, 1.9 rebounds and 0.5 blocks while playing 9.6 minutes per game and helping the Pirates reach the second round of the NCAA Tournament. His best game as a collegiate came at nationally ranked Xavier on Feb. 14, when he poured in 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds.Â
