MINNEAPOLIS - Managers on a Mission has named their 2018 "20 Future Leaders of Sport," a group they will be sending on various mission trips in several African countries this summer. This year, Seton Hall will be sending one of its own. Shaaliyah Lyons, the Director of Basketball Operations for the women's basketball team, was named as one of the honorees by MOAM this year. Lyons will be heading to Malawi in southeastern Africa, where she will spend three weeks offering educational support to children in the area.
Lyons became the Director of Basketball Operations for women's basketball prior to the 2017-2018 season. Prior to that, she was a student manager for the team all four years as an undergrad at The Hall. Lyons graduated from Seton Hall in 2017 with a B.S. in Sport Management with a Certificate in Entrepreneurial Studies as well as a Minor in Africana Studies.
"When I got it, I was just shocked," Lyons said about her reaction when she found out she was selected for the trip. "I had applied for it about two years when I was a manager and never got it, so I didn't really think anything of it this time I applied."
Lyons is one of five individuals selected to attend the mission trip in Malawi, which lasts from June 23-July 14. She will be joining managers and athletics staff members from other schools across the country such as Ohio State and North Carolina State.
MOAM will also be sending members to Ghana, Uganda, Liberia, and Zambia. One of their primary goals will be to get children to participate in sports every day. For Lyons, she wants to set out her perspectives on basketball and teaching the game from a fundamental standpoint.
"Now we're moving into this 'showey-phase' and we're forgetting the fundamentals," Lyons said. "I think it's just about teaching them the essentials of the sport, the foundation of the sport so that they can fall in love with the actual sport and not just the fancy stuff."
