Four Pirates Earn BIG EAST Sport Excellence Awards

NEW YORK – Four Seton Hall student-athletes, men's golfer Chris Yeom (Flushing, N.Y.), men's basketball's Michael Nzei (Makurdi, Nigeria) and men's and women's swimmers Lior Grubert (Yehud-Monosson, Irsael) and Clara Capone (West Hartford, Conn.) were named 2018-19 BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award recipients on Tuesday. The four winners for The Hall mark the second-most among any BIG EAST institution.
The Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards are given to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST-sponsored sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community. Student-athletes who have attained junior academic standing and a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 are eligible. The winners are chosen by the BIG EAST Faculty Athletics Representative Council.
Yeom graduated in May with a dual major in Business Finance and IT Management after a stellar career on the links for the Pirates. A three-time All-BIG EAST selection and two-time Ping Northeast All-Region Team pick, Yeom finished his Seton Hall career with a 73.58 stroke average which was the second-best in school history. As a senior in 2018-19 he fired five sub-par rounds and finished with three top-10 finishes, including an eighth-place run at the BIG EAST Championship. Off the course he is a three-time BIG EAST Academic All Star and a six-time Dean's List member.
Nzei finished his Seton Hall career as one of the most decorated players both on and off the court in program history. The third player in SHU history to ever play in four-straight NCAA Tournaments, he is the program's all-time record holder with 135 career games played. Following his senior season in 2018-19 he was named BIG EAST Men's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He graduated with an undergraduate degree in Economics before earning an MBA in Finance during his time in South Orange. Nzei is a four-time BIG EAST Academic All Star and an eight-time Dean's list member.
Grubert graduated this May with a degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance and Information Technology, earning a 3.876 GPA during his time at The Hall. A four-time BIG EAST Academic All Star, he earned a perfect 4.0 GPA in three semesters and was a seven-time Dean's List member. In the pool, Grubert is a six-time BIG EAST individual champion and a nine-time All-BIG EAST pick. He was a member of Seton Hall's back-to-back team titles in 2017 and 2018 and holds a pair of school records.
Capone is the lone junior in the group honored for The Hall, currently pursuing a degree in Graphic Design and Advertising. A two-time BIG EAST Academic All Star, she has been a member of teams that earned NCAA APR Public Recognition Awards twice in her career. In the pool Capone holds six school records and a is three-time All-BIG EAST selection.
