Orlando, Fla. - The Seton Hall women's tennis team got its spring break off to a great start, defeating the University of Charleston, 4-3, behind the strength of a dominating doubles performance coupled with a comeback win at No. 1 singles for senior Minja Gligic (Belgrade, Serbia), Sunday at the USTA Training Center.
The victory also came despite the Pirates still needing to forfeit No. 6 singles due to not having enough healthy competitors.
Seton Hall got off to a great start by earning the doubles point with three convincing wins. In a new pairing this spring, senior Michal Matson (Christchurch, New Zealand) and Aina Plana Ventosa (Barcelona, Spain) got things going with a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles. Then senior Anniek Jansen (Naarden, Netherlands) and freshman Hiba El Khalifi (Casablanca, Morocco) clinched the doubles win by taking No. 3 doubles with a 6-2 performance. For good measure, Gligic and junior Hermehr Kaur (Redlands, Calif.) made it a clean sweep with a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles.
Plana Ventosa was the first to capture victory in singles, earning a 6-3, 6-1 straight sets win over Haarini Balkakrishnan. Charleston evened the match after Prinkle Singh defeated Matson at No. 2 singles. El Khalifi picked up a straight sets win at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-4 over Charlotte Ziegler. Jansen won her first set over Mathilde Simon, but Simon came back to take the next two sets, 6-3, 6-2, to even the match at 3-3.
So it came down to No. 1 singles to determine the winner. Gligic lost her first set to Katie Swann in a tiebreaker, but she came back to take sets two and three, both by 6-4 scores, to earn the Pirates victory.
Seton Hall will resume spring break action Tuesday against Sacred Heart at the USTA Training Center in Orlando.
