South Orange, N.J. – Seton Hall Athletics is a leader among its peers in academic and athletic success, and for a 10th consecutive year, the department is concluding the academic year with a record-high cumulative grade point average. After Spring 2020, Seton Hall student-athletes have combined for a 3.464 cumulative GPA, which improves upon the 3.431 the department had after Spring 2019. All 14 varsity programs concluded 2019-20 with cumulative, year and semester GPAs above 3.0.
This record academic success all comes in spite of the COVID-19 pandemic upending campus learning and forcing all student-athletes into remote education for the final nine weeks of the spring semester. The incredible ascent in the department's grades dates back to the end of the 2010-11 academic year, when the department's cumulative GPA was at 3.174.
In addition, 157 student-athletes made the Seton Hall Dean's List during the Spring 2020 semester, representing over 60 percent of the student-athlete population. To achieve Dean's List designation, students must have a 3.4 GPA or higher during the semester.
"Congratulations to our student-athletes for showing incredible resiliency in the face of a global pandemic to finish the semester strong and deliver another record-setting grade point average," Seton Hall Director of Athletics & Recreation Bryan Felt said. "The commitment that our student-athletes display in the classroom is a direct reflection of how invested they are in their education and in becoming our world's next great leaders."
All 14 programs currently boast cumulative GPAs above 3.0 with women's soccer leading the way at 3.685. Men's soccer has the highest GPA among the male sports at 3.612. In total, eight of Seton Hall's 14 teams have a cumulative GPA above 3.50.
Seton Hall's teams combined to post a 3.508 GPA in the 2019-20 academic year with women's golf leading the female sports at 3.699 and men's golf leading the male sports at 3.658.
In the Spring 2020 semester even with the COVID-19 pandemic hitting, the Pirates combined for a 3.593 semester GPA with women's tennis leading all the female teams at 3.737 and men's soccer leading all the male teams at 3.651.
Men's basketball, the department's highest-profile team that finished No. 15 in the national rankings in 2020 and won the BIG EAST regular season championship, continues to boast a strong academic profile as it completed its fifth consecutive year with a cumulative GPA over 3.0. The program had a 3.366 GPA in the Spring 2020 semester, a 3.215 GPA in the 2019-20 academic year and currently has a cumulative GPA of 3.167.
Women's basketball, which has advanced to national postseason in five of six seasons prior to COVID-19 canceling 2020 postseason bids, also posted strong grades in 2019-20 with a 3.207 spring GPA, 3.073 full-year GPA and a 3.004 cumulative GPA.
