South Orange, N.J. - Seton Hall men's basketball assistant coaches Duane Woodward and Tony Skinn are two of 21 BIG EAST men's basketball assistant coaches that have formed the Coaches For Action (CFA) coalition that aims to use its basketball platform to bring awareness to injustices that impact student-athletes, fans and communities, beginning with generating sustainable action in efforts to eliminate prejudice, discrimination, and oppression against people of color.
Coaches for Action is working with the BIG EAST Conference on three immediate, sustainable actions to begin pushing the needle of progress forward, including all teams wearing a "Black Lives Matter" patch on all home and road uniforms; create a scholarship fund that will be awarded to a first-generation minority student that holds a 3.0 GPA or higher that will elect to attend one of the 11 BIG EAST institutions; and educate student-athletes, coaches and members of the community on the importance of voting in national and local elections and committing to holding a voter registration drive in early October.
"The recent events have brought light to a far too familiar reality," Woodward said. "As a former student-athlete and former professional basketball player, I can't tell you how often I faced racism, prejudice and discrimination. I am proud to work in unison with a group of my peers to not only bring about awareness, but to also help spearhead much needed change. My commitment to this initiative has been embraced by the administration at Seton Hall, and I look forward to sharing our progress as we move to eliminate racism."
"This is a significant time in history, and I'm appreciate to be a part of a Seton Hall program that is supportive in tackling issues surrounding race relations," Skinn said. "While issues on black injustices are not new, they are being highlighted, making it a key time to drive change in our community. Power is in knowledge; knowledge encourages action; and action leads to change. I'm proud of this coalition's effort in bringing change."
