George Floyd's murder, along with countless others, was heinous, and it has sparked outrage. For too long black men and women have been treated differently because of the color of their skin. One of our nation's pillars is that all men and women are created equal and entitled to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Instead, racial injustice, most pointedly directed at African Americans, plagues our communities nationwide.Â
Â
We are responsible for the education, development and enrichment of 250 young men and women who are preparing to become our world's next great leaders. It is our mission to have high academic, athletic and moral standards in order to maximize our student-athletes' potential and prepare them for success after graduation.
Â
In addition, our position as an athletics department with a reach to thousands of fans, alumni and supporters gives us a platform that we must use to help educate and inspire change.
Â
Racism and discrimination is a learned behavior, and it is systemic here in this country. It must be broken down at the foundation, and for us we believe it begins with listening, understanding, education and pushing past ignorance and intolerance.Â
Â
Our road to change will begin with open and honest dialogue. Next week we will be holding focus groups with our student-athletes and staff. The purpose of these focus groups is to gather our student-athletes and staff so they can begin to express and share their feelings. In gathering our diverse population, for some the benefit will be in sharing their experiences and for some the benefit will be in listening and gaining a better understanding. For all of us it will be the importance of uniting as one against the hatred, racism and bigotry happening in the world around us.Â
Â
This will be the beginning of our action plan and our focus groups will help map our course for meaningful change on our campus and throughout our community.
