Kempinski's Run to Semifinals Highlights The Hall's Weekend at Navy

Annapolis, Md. - Sophomore Oliwia Kempinski won her first two singles matches to advance to the semifinals of the D Flight at the 2021 Navy Blue & Gold Invitational. Overall, the Pirates had five singles victories in the championship portion of the bracket and also had strong success in the consolation round.
Kempinski started her tournament off with a win over Navy's Corrine Farid in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, on Friday. Then on Saturday, she topped George Mason's Brianna Gibbs, 6-4, 7-6, to reach the semifinals. Later in the day, she took on Navy's Casey Accola and fell, 6-3, 7-5.
The Hall had three others advance in their first singles match. Junior Hiba El Khalifi topped Olivia Rothfeld of Towson, 7-6, 6-2, in the B flight. Freshmen Hili Kronzon and Arabella Moen each won in the C singles flight. Kronzon defeated Towson's Lea Kosanovic, 6-3, 6-4, and Moen knocked off George Mason's Savanna Crowell, 6-3, 6-2.
Among the Pirates who competed in the consolation round, junior Arina Gumerova enjoyed the most success. She won in the consolation quarterfinals and semifinals on Saturday, defeating Towson's Amelia Lawson and UNC Wilmington's Zoe Huffman, respectively. She lost in the consolation final to UConn's Julieanne Bou on Sunday.
The Pirates will wrap up the fall season the weekend of Oct. 23 at Fordham.
