NEW YORK – Seton Hall's Liam Cosgrove (Sea Girt, N.J.), David Festa (Verona, N.J.) and Lizzie Win (Sylvania, Ohio) were named recipients of the BIG EAST's prestigious Sports Excellence Awards for the 2020-21 year on Thursday.
Â
The BIG EAST Sport Excellence Awards are given to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST-sponsored sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community. Student-athletes who have attained junior academic standing and a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 are eligible. The winners are chosen by the BIG EAST Faculty Athletics Representative Council.
Â
When it comes to the 100-yard butterfly, Cosgrove reigned supreme in the BIG EAST. The Sea Girt, N.J., native won the event each of his final three years in the pool capped off by his school-record setting swim in a time of 47.10. Â Overall, Cosgrove is a four-time BIG EAST Champion having been named to the All-BIG EAST Team each of his four years at The Hall. A dominant force both in the pool and in the classroom, Cosgrove earned a spot on the BIG EAST All-Academic list all four years in South Orange to the tune of a 3.737 cumulative GPA and seven Dean's List appearances.
Â
Festa earned All-BIG EAST First Team honors after going 6-4 with 67 strikeouts, an impressive 2.00 ERA and a miniscule .175 opponent's batting average. In conference play, he went 5-1 with a 1.54 ERA with 40 strikeouts. At one point, he allowed only three earned runs and tossed three complete games over five consecutive winning decisions from his start at Villanova on April 18 to his gem thrown against Creighton on May 15. A BIG EAST All-Academic Team selection, Festa's year culminated with his selection in the 13th round of the 2021 MLB Draft by the Minnesota Twins. The 6-6 right-hander became the 111th Pirate to be picked in the draft.
Â
Win became the first golfer in Seton Hall history to be named to the All-Conference Team four times. Possessing the second-lowest stroke average in the BIG EAST last year at 75.67, she tied for sixth at the BIG EAST Championship. It was the fourth time she finished among the top eight at the conference's marquee event. Win's legendary Pirate career comes to a close ranked third all-time with a career scoring average of 75.85. No golfer in Seton Hall history has played in more than her 111 rounds and her 18 career top-10 finishes are the most ever for a Pirate. All of this was achieved while maintaining a 3.96 grade point average.
