Morgantown, W. Va. – The Pirates opened the WVU Invite in a big way on Thursday night, setting a new program mark in the 200 Free Relay. Lea Moeller (New Lenox, Ill.), Josie McCartney (Verona, Wisc.), Cornelia Jerresand (Taeby, Sweden) and Natalie Heim (Middletown, N.J.) combined to touch the wall with a time of 1:32.66 to top the previous record which was set at last year's BIG EAST Championships.
Moeller led off the relay with a 23.25 split in the 50 Free, which also sets a new program mark. Moeller and the rest of her relay team's time was good enough for a third place finish in the event.
In the 500 Free, Allie Waggoner (Moorestown, N.J.) swam the team's season best time in the prelims, touching the wall with a time of 4:59.85. The sophomore would compete in the final in the same event later on in the night, finishing that race with a time of 5:01.24.
The Pirates also posted a season best time in the 400 Medley Relay to cap off the night. Julie Stampe (Allerod-Birkerod, Denmark), Sierra Cripps (Seymour, Conn.), Moeller and Heim finished the race in 3:51.62.
Day Two of the WVU Invite gets underway at 10 a.m. on Friday with prelims followed by event finals at 6 p.m. Events include the 200 Medley Relay, 100 Fly, 400 IM, 200 Free, 100 Breast, 100 Back, 800 Free Relay and 1M dive.
