South Orange, N.J. — The Detroit Pistons officially announced Tuesday that they've signed Seton Hall alum Jared Rhoden '22 to a two-way contract. As part of the guaranteed deal, Rhoden will split time between the Pistons and their G League affiliate, the Motor City Cruise.
The Baldwin, N.Y. native made his debut for the Cruise last night against the Capital City Go Go in Washington D.C. and he scored 15 points, grabbed five rebounds, tallied a block and an assist. Rhoden currently leads the G League with a 51.4 three-point field goal percentage and he's averaging 13.9 points and 6.5 rebounds per game in 16 games this season.
Rhoden was one of the top performers in the pre-NBA Draft process, starting with his all-tournament showing at the prestigious Portsmouth Invitational where he averaged 15.7 points and 6.7 rebounds per game against some of the top college basketball players in the country. He then shined at the NBA G League Elite Camp in Chicago and earned a call-up to the NBA Draft Scouting Combine. Rhoden worked out for multiple NBA teams before accepting an NBA Summer League with the Sacramento Kings.
With Sacramento, Rhoden made the most of his opportunity. He played in all five Summer League games for the Kings and he averaged 25.3 minutes, 11.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.4 steals per contest. Rhoden also shot 50 percent from the field and 88.9 percent from the free throw line. Following Summer League, Rhoden signed with the Atlanta Hawks' G League squad, the College Park Skyhawks, where he turned into one of the top players in the G League.
Rhoden was the linchpin for a Seton Hall squad that returned to the NCAA Tournament in 2021-22 and registered its sixth 20-win season in the last seven years. He was named All-BIG EAST First Team, All-Met First Team by the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association and was named to NABC and USBWA All-District Teams after finishing sixth in the BIG EAST with 15.5 points per game.
Rhoden is tied for 33rd in program history with 1,270 career points. He is one of only 12 Pirates to log more than 1,200 points and 600 rebounds in a career. He played on three teams that won at least 20 games, two NCAA Tournament teams and was a key contributor for the 2020 squad that won the BIG EAST regular season championship.
Rhoden looks to become the 30th Pirate to play in an NBA game and the fifth since 2016. Seton Hall head coach Shaheen Holloway coached all four of the Pirates that have reached the NBA over the last six years when he was associate head coach from 2010-18. Holloway recruited Rhoden to Seton Hall when he was associate head coach before accepting the Saint Peter's head coaching job following the 2017-18 season.
