South Orange, N.J. – Seton Hall women's swimming & diving senior Cornelia Jerresand (Taeby, Sweden) has been named the New Jersey Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (NJAIAW) Seton Hall Woman of the Year, the organization announced ahead of its 2023 National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) celebration held on Saturday.
The NJAIAW celebrates the women and girls of New Jersey and their contributions to sport. The group awards Woman of the Year accolades to outstanding female student-athletes from high schools, colleges and universities throughout New Jersey for their significant contributions to their institution and community through athletic accomplishments, academic success and community involvement.
Jerresand has been an impactful member of the women's swimming & diving team over the last four years. Currently gearing up for the 2023 BIG EAST Championships this week, Jerresand became a BIG EAST Champion in the 50 Free back in 2021. She has also earned All-BIG EAST honors in all three years with the Pirates.
Outside the pool, Jerresand has made a difference within the Seton Hall community. She is a key leader of Seton Hall's SHE Can Committee, and has been instrumental in equity efforts within the athletic department. Jerresand helped lead the charge for a newly installed free feminine product dispenser in the female locker room suite. Additionally, she has been involved as a SAAC representative for swimming and diving, focusing on diversity, equity and inclusion efforts.
Jerresand has been a standout in the classroom as well during her time at Seton Hall. She has been named to the All-BIG EAST Academic Team three times, and was named Seton Hall's Junior Female Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2022. Jerresand was also recognized as a Seton Hall Academic All-Star, awarded to the athletes with the top-10 highest grade point averages within the department.
National Girls and Women in Sports Day celebrated its 37th year in 2023, as the organization also takes part in the continued celebration of 50 years of Title IX. National Girls and Women in Sports Day inspires girls and women to play and be active, to realize their full power. NGWSD 2023 recognizes student-athletes, champion athletes, coaches, administrators and lawmakers who are committed to providing equitable access to sports for all girls and women.
