Petrova had not competed in singles since suffering a hip injury in October 2021, missing all of the spring 2022 campaign. She had been competing only in doubles up until Tuesday. She lost the first set to Butler's Emma Beavin, but roared back to win sets two and three, taking the third set in a sweep, 6-0.
Oliwia Kempinski kept her momentum going with another singles win at No. 2, taking down Delaney Schurhamer in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. She now is 9-2 in spring dual matches and 16-6 overall.
The Pirates had another fantastic day in doubles competition, winning the doubles point for the fifth straight match. The No. 1 pairing of Arina Gumerova and Aina Plana Ventosa got it done with a tiebreaking win over Natalie Boesing and Chase Metcalf, 7-6(6). After Butler took No. 2 doubles, it was up to Hiba El Khalifi and Arabella Moen at No. 3, and the pairing secured victory with a 6-4 defeat of Norah Balthazor and Jordan Schildcrout.
The Pirates close out spring break competition against Western Carolina Wednesday evening at the USTA National Training Center at 6 p.m.
