South Orange, N.J. -Â Seton Hall Athletics has hired new personnel across multiple units over the last few months that have strengthened the department especially in areas that work directly with student-athletes and their development.Â
"We are excited about the personnel additions that have joined the Seton Hall Athletics family," said Seton Hall Director of Athletics Bryan Felt. "We are only as good as the people we have behind the scenes ensuring that our student-athletes are having a great experience, and we are happy to welcome new Pirates in our sports medicine, sports performance, athletic communications and facilities & operations areas."
In sports medicine, Tony Testa, Seton Hall's Director of Sports Medicine since 2009, has received a title promotion to Senior Associate Athletics Director for Sports Medicine, which better reflects his position on Felt's senior staff. Testa oversees all aspects of Seton Hall's sports medicine and serves as the athletic trainer for the men's and women's golf and men's & women's cross country teams.
Testa has two new hires that joined him in the athletic training room over the summer. Christina Gambino is the new associate head athletic trainer, assisting Testa in managing all aspects of sports medicine and serving as the athletic trainer for women's basketball. She returns to The Hall after working with the New York Mets, where she served as an athletic trainer within their minor league programs in Port St. Lucie and Binghamton and in the Dominican Republic as part of the Mets Dominican Summer League program. Gambino earned her master's degree at Seton Hall and previously has spent time working with Seton Hall's sports medicine and strength & conditioning staffs.
Javier Garcia joined Seton Hall as an assistant athletic trainer and works primarily with the men's basketball program. He spent the last three seasons as an assistant athletic trainer at Florida International, where he worked with the men's basketball program. He is a New Jersey native and holds bachelor's and master's degrees from Montclair State and a doctorate from Florida International.
In the weight room, Seton Hall has three new sports performance coaches. Leading the department is Kelly Shaver as the Director of Sports Performance. Shaver, who began his role over the summer, came to Seton Hall after three years at Hofstra, where he was the Associate AD for Sports Performance overseeing the department and working primarily with men's basketball, volleyball and field hockey. He also spent nine years as the head strength and conditioning coach at Iona and also spent four years as an assistant at Fordham. Shaver, who holds bachelor's and master's degrees from Georgia Southern, is working primarily with Seton Hall's men's basketball and men's & women's soccer teams.
Joining Shaver is Angela Baker Johnson, assistant director of sports performance, who is working primarily with Seton Hall's women's basketball and volleyball teams. Johnson, who holds a bachelor's degree in exercise science and a master's degree in kinesiology, is a veteran in collegiate strength and conditioning with over 13 years of experience within the basketball power conferences, including at Stanford, Ole Miss, LSU and Washington.
Also joining Shaver's staff this month is assistant sports performance director Edward Jules, who comes to The Hall after two seasons at NJIT, where he was an assistant strength & conditioning coach working with men's tennis and swimming & diving. Jules also has collegiate experience working as a strength & conditioning coach at Rutgers and NYU and here at Seton Hall, serving as an intern with the Pirates during the Fall 2018 semester. Jules holds a bachelor's degree in exercise science from Montclair State and is in progress on his master's degree at the University of Florida.
In the communications department, Matt Ambrose returns to Seton Hall as Assistant Athletics Director for Digital Media & Communications and will work primarily with Seton Hall's men's basketball, women's soccer and baseball teams.
