New Providence, N.J. - In a meat grinder match, the Seton Hall women's tennis team dug deep and secured a huge doubles point and then pulled off a big third-set singles win with the match on the line in a 4-3 win over LIU Friday night at Murray Hill Tennis & Fitness.
Imogen Brooker had the clincher for the Pirates, battling back from a first set defeat against Mia Tsoukalas in the No. 3 position, coming back to win set two and then dominating set three to secure victory.
"The doubles intensity was fantastic and a great way to start the match," said head coach James Enzler. "Tamsin and Rachel getting the break late in that doubles to secure the doubles point was huge and proved pivotal. In singles, I'm really proud of Imi [Brooker] and how she stuck to the strategy we employed and simply focused on how to utilize it."
Seton Hall got the match off on the right foot, winning the doubles point with wins at No. 2 by Isabelle May and Anastasia Sereda and at No. 3 by Tamsin Hart and Rachel Benoualid.
The Pirates picked up their second point when Tamsin Hart's opponent had to retire due to injury, and they went up 3-1 when Isabelle May defeated Paula Guillen Cerver in the No. 5 position. May is now 9-2 in spring singles, including 5-1 at No. 5.
LIU knotted up the match though, leaving things to Brooker, who played her 11th third-set match of the year and is now victorious in eight of them.
Seton Hall will be back in action at Murray Hill Tennis Saturday night against Providence in a BIG EAST match that starts at 6 p.m.
