Nicholas Werkman was a prolific scorer at Seton Hall, holding the school record for best scoring average in a single season and for a career and became the school’s all-time leading scorer and first to reach 2,000 career points (2,273). He was the nation’s leading scorer in 1963 (29.5 PPG), second in 1964 (33.2 PPG) and third in 1962 (33.0 PPG), and he became the first Pirate to score 50 points in a game, dropping 52 on Scranton on Jan. 29, 1964. In 1963-64, he was a Helm’s Foundation All-America selection, and in 1964 he won the Haggerty Award as the Metropolitan Player of the Year. In 1965, he was a rookie with the Boston Celtics and then spent eight years with the Eastern League.
