MEN'S SOCCER (10-3-3, 5-3-2; Ranked 13th)The men's soccer team swept a pair of matches last week highlighted by a 2-1 victory over the top-ranked Connecticut Huskies on Sunday (Oct. 25). The Pirates also defeated Columbia, 1-0, to improve their record to 10-3-3 overall and 5-3-2 in the BIG EAST.
Junior forward Peter Scavo (Raritan, NJ) scored twice in the second half as #25 Seton Hall upset #1 Uconn, 2-1 before 4,049 fans at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium in Storrs, CT. The Pirates rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit to score two unanswered goals in the second half, despite playing without two starters Kobie Johnson (Princeton Junction, NJ) and Brian Cuddy (North Brunswick, NJ) due to injury. Connecticut jumped on the board first at the 37:05 mark. The Pirates started the second half by pressuring the UConn defense, led by the play of freshman midfielder Luke Serafin (Piscataway, NJ), starting in place of Cuddy. At the 74:12 mark, Serafin corralled a ball in the midfield and found freshman Gregory Strohmann (Wehreim, Germany), who fired on net. The ball squirted away to Scavo who tucked it in the upper right corner of the goal to tie the match at 1-1. Just over three minutes later, with the Pirates still pressuring, junior Shaun Nicholson (St. Louis, MO) headed a ball into the middle for Scavo, who dribbled in from about 40 yards away and chipped the ball over UConn goalkeeper Bryheem Hancock for the decisive score. UConn outshot the Pirates 15-10 and held a slim 6-5 edge in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Derek Martin (St. Louis, MO) made three saves in net for Seton Hall, while Hancock stopped six shots for the Huskies.
On Wednesday (Oct. 21) Scavo scored on a penalty kick at the 81:47 mark to break a scoreless tie to lead Seton Hall past Columbia 1-0 in non-conference action. With the game scoreless and regulation winding down, Seton Hall put together an offensive attack in front of the Columbia net. Junior midfielder Shaun Nicholson (St. Louis, MO) broke free from a defender and drilled a shot from five yards out that was headed for the back of the net. Columbia's Anthony Balsamo stopped the shot with his hand, earning a red card and setting up the penalty kick for Scavo. Scavo then knocked the ball into the lower left corner of the net past Lion goalkeeper Matt Hill for the only score of the match.
