The men's soccer team split a pair of BIG EAST home matches last week with a 1-0 loss to Rutgers and a 2-0 win over Syracuse. The Pirates finished the week with a record of 7-2-1 overall and 3-2 in conference play.
On Saturday (Oct. 3), junior back Jeff Rigby (Turnersville, NJ) scored in the first half and freshman forward Gregory Strohmann (Weirheim, Germany) added an insurance tally in the second half to lead the Pirates to the 2-0 victory. In goal, senior Derek Martin (St. Louis, MO) notched a season-high eight saves to record his first full shutout of the season. Seton Hall was outshot by a slim 14-13 margin, but held an 11-5 edge in corner kicks. Martin made a season-high eight saves, while Hobson stopped five shots in net for the Orangemen.
On Wednesday (Sept. 30) Scott McGinn's unassisted goal at the 9:54 mark of the first half led Rutgers to a 1-0 win over the Pirates. The Pirates, who were shut out for the first time this season, also snapped a five-match unbeaten streak. Seton Hall outshot the Scarlet Knights 10-8, including 4-2 in the second half and held a 6-3 edge in corner kicks. Martin made four saves in net for the Pirates.
Next for Men's Soccer: Seton Hall travels to Villanova on Wednesday (Oct. 7) for a 3:30 p.m. match, then return home on Saturday (Oct. 10), hosting Boston College at 1:00 p.m.

Carroll field. The Pirates' record drops to 5-3-1 overall and 2-2-1 in BIG EAST play. Penn State scored two first-half goals, by Carole Dutchka and Samantha Abelson, to earn the victory and remain undefeated. Trailing 3-0 late in the game, the Pirates spoiled the Lions' shutout bid when freshman defender Brigid Sullivan (Philadelphia, PA) scored on a 15-yard direct kick at 53:06, for her second goal of the season. Penn State held an 18-9 advantage in shots for the game. Senior goalkeeper Stacey Nagle (Macungie, PA) notched four saves on the day. Sophomore defender Michele Phalen (Somerset, NJ) received the Pirates' Player of the Game Award as presented annually by Seton Hall's Arts and Sciences Alumni.

The Pirates finished the week with an overall record of 8-8 and 1-1 in BIG EAST play. Junior Julie Birchler (Fairfield, NJ) recorded a career-high 17 kills and team-high 15 digs to lead the Pirates over Syracuse on Sunday (Oct. 4). Senior Jacki Woodford (Prince Frederick, MD) and freshman Paige Ellertson (Mt. Holly springs, PA) contributed 12 kills apiece. Junior setter Kadri Kruus (Tallinn, Estonia) added a career-high 55 assists and 11 kills for the Pirates. Seton Hall took the first game, 15-11, but Syracuse rebounded to knot the match at one game apiece with a 15-10 win in game two. The Pirates, behind the play of Ellertson and Woodford, captured the next two matches, 15-7, 15-9, to seal the victory. Junior Jennifer Mumby (Chelmsford, MA) added 10 kills for the Pirates, who snapped a four-match losing streak. On Friday (Oct. 2) the Pirates dropped a 3-0 (15-7, 15-5, 15-10) decision at Notre Dame. Kruus had 24 assists for the Pirates.

DeBenedictis, who finished in the top spot for the fourth-straight meet, ran the course in 24:42.87. Senior Ned Brooks (North Babylon, NY) placed 34th overall with a time of 27:32. The women's team finished eighth as a team with 211 total points. Marissa DeFreese (Rahway, NJ) was the first Pirate to cross the finish line, placing 29th overall with a time of 19:53.

September 5 at Wm Paterson Invitational (M 2nd /W 3rd) 12 at Lafayette Invitational (M 6th /W 45th) 19 at Monmouth Invitational (M 3rd /W 4th) 26 at Geo. Washington Invitational (M 5th) GOLF The Seton Hall men's golf team won the Liberty Fall Golf Classic, played on Monday and Tuesday, September 28-29, at Seatrail-The Byrd Golf Course in Sunset Beach, NC. The Pirates shot an aggregate 572 (four under par) with identical scores of 286 to finish eight strokes ahead of runner-up Jacksonville University. The Pirates were led by sophomore Eugene Smith (Glen Ridge, NJ) who shot a five-under 139 to finish in second place, one stroke behind UNC-Greensboro's Jason Martin. Senior Clark Topping (Hyattsville, MD) finished in third place, one stroke behind Smith, with a four-under 140. Rounding out the Seton Hall point scorers were senior Mike Costigan (London, Ontario), who finished 13th with an aggregate score of three-over 145 and freshman Brian McGowan (Cresskill, NJ), who finished in 20th place with a score of 148. The win at Liberty marks the second tournament of the year that the Pirates have won under head coach Richard Distlerath.

The Pirates won four of six singles matches to defeat the Peacocks. At No. 1 singles, Alex Militec (Belgrad, Yugoslavia) defeated Marc Andre Dubois, 6-3, 6-2. Lou Castelli (Maplewood, NJ) captured No. 4 singles over Mark Buitrago, 6-3, 6-0. Alfred Aguilar (Paterson, NJ) defeated Christian Fierabend, 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 5 singles spot.
