MEN'S BASKETBALL (1-2)
The men's basketball team won its first game of the 1998-99 season
with a 75-57 victory over intra-state rival St. Peter's on Saturday (Nov.
14). The Pirates improved their record to 1-2 overall.
Junior guard Gary Saunders (New York, NY) scored 25 points to lead
the Pirates on 9-of-14 shooting and a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw
line. Junior tri-captain Shaheen Holloway (Queens, NY) scored 17
points and added seven assists. Freshman guard Ty Shine (Augusta,
GA) rounded out the scoring for the Pirates, coming off the bench to score
12 points, while adding six rebounds. Sophomore forward Reggie Garrett
(Somerset, NJ) and freshman center Charles Manga (Cameroon, Africa) had
a game-high seven rebounds apiece. Sophomore guard Chuck Moore (Plymouth-Whitemarsh,
PA), starting in place of the injured Rimas Kaukenas (Vilnius, Lithuania),
chipped in nine points and senior tri-captain Duane Jordan (New York, NY)
had eight points, six rebounds and three blocks.
NEXT FOR SETON HALL: The Pirates host Drexel on Wednesday (Nov.
18) for a 7:30 game at the Continental Airlines Arena.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL (EXHIBITION)
The women's basketball team defeated the New York Gazelles, 88-56,
Wednesday (Nov. 11) in pre-season exhibition at Walsh Gym.
Six Pirates scored in double figures to lead the Seton Hall to the
victory. Sophomore Arminda Moreno (Telde, Canary
Islands) led all scorers with 20 points. Classmate, Starr Fuller
(Boston, MA) had 17 points and 14 rebounds. Senior captain
Danielle Davis (Baltimore, MD) also notched a double-double with 11 points
and 11 rebounds. Yolanda Rouse's (Clewiston, FL) double-double included
14 points and 12 assists. Center Susan Murray (North Mississauga, Ontario)
rounded out the Pirate starters with 11 points and seven rebounds. Junior
guard Erika Ashmon (Montezuma, GA) came off the bench to score 10 points.
Former Pirate standouts Texlin Quinney and Latoya Brookins returned to
their alma mater as members of the Gazelles. Quinney scored six points
while Brookins chipped in two for New York.
MEN'S SOCCER (11-4-4, 5-3-3: Season complete)
Junior forward Peter Scavo (Raritan, NJ) and freshman forward Gregory
Strohmann (Wehrheim, Germany) were honored by the BIG EAST Conference at
its annual post-season banquet. Scavo, for the second-consecutive
year, was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team, while Strohmann earned
All-BIG EAST Second Team and All-Rookie honors. The duo has combined
for 70 points this season in leading the Pirates to an 11-4-4 record.
Scavo has amassed a career-high
35 points this season in 19 games, including a BIG EAST-high 13 goals and
eight assists. Included in those 13 goals were six game-winners,
including three against Top 10 teams. Scavo started the season by
scoring the winning goal in an 2-1 overtime win over then #5 Maryland on
September 1. He also netted the game-winner in a 3-2 overtime win
over then #9 Georgetown on September 18 and single-handedly defeated #1
Connecticut by scoring back-to-back goals in a three minute span in the
Pirates' 2-1 upset win over UConn on October 25 in Storrs. Scavo,
the New Jersey Coaches' Association Player of the Month in September, was
named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week twice this season. His
selection as a First Team member was a unanimous one.
Strohmann has 25 points
on the season, second best on the Pirates. He scored 10 goals this
season and added five assists in his first year of collegiate soccer.
He led all BIG EAST rookies in league scoring with 16 points and was second
among all newcomers in overall points, trailing Notre Dame's Shane Walton.
Strohmann assisted on the game-winning goal in the 2-1 win over #5 Maryland
and scored two goals and assisted on the other in the 3-2 win over #9 Georgetown.
Strohmann, along with Walton, was one of only two players to earn both
All-BIG EAST and All-Rookie honors.
The Pirates, 11-4-4, spent 11-consecutive weeks in the Top 25, reaching
as high as #10 during the season. In its most recent action, Seton
Hall lost to Rutgers, 3-1 in overtime, in the quarterfinals of the BIG
EAST Tournament on Saturday (Nov 7).

VOLLEYBALL (10-14, 3-6)
The Seton Hall women's volleyball team closed out its regular season by dropping a pair of 3-0 losses to Georgetown and Villanova this past weekend. The Pirates fell 3-0 to the Hoyas on Saturday (Nov. 14), in Washington, DC, and closed out the season with a 3-0 loss at Villanova on Sunday (Nov. 15).
Georgetown scored a 15-6, 15-9, 15-5 win over Seton Hall. Junior Jennifer Mumby (Chelmsford, MA) led the way with 12 kills in 26 attempts, while senior Renee Powell (Lincoln Park, MI) added eight kills. Junior setter Kadri Kruus (Tallin, Estonia) totaled a match-high 37 assists.
The Pirates finished the season with a 15-11, 15-9, 15-6 loss to Villanova. Kruus and senior Jacki Woodford (Prince Frederick, MD) led the way with 10 kills apiece, while senior Julie Birchler (Fairfield, NJ) added nine.

CROSS COUNTRY
Senior Anthony Debenedictis (Roselle Park, NJ) ran to a third-place
finish at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region Championships this past weekend,
held in Annapolis, MD. DeBenedictis' time of 31:09.91 was 10 seconds
off the pace of top finisher Daniel Kinyua of Mt. St. Mary's and eight
seconds behind runner-up Justin McCarthy of Georgetown. As a team,
the Pirates placed 22nd with 542 points, while Princeton took first with
a point total of 57.
On the women's side, Seton Hall finished 16th with 493 points, as Villanova
captured the team championship with 19 points. Marissa DeFreese (Rahway,
NJ) was the top Seton Hall finisher, racing to a 76th-place finish with
a time of 19:47.61, while Michelle Henry (Scarborough, Ontario) was the
next Pirate to cross the finish line, racing to a 19:52.30 finish, good
for 82nd place.
