MEN'S SOCCER (10-3-4, 5-3-3; Ranked 17th)With a home match in the BIG EAST Quarterfinals weighing in the balance, Seton Hall and Providence played to a scoreless tie before 821 fans in BIG EAST men's soccer action on Owen T. Carroll Field on Saturday (Oct. 31). Seton Hall moves to 10-3-4 overall, 5-3-3 in the BIG EAST.
The two teams battled through a very physical 90 minutes, as both squads had legitimate scoring opportunities. In the first overtime, Seton Hall took control, but was unable to break through the strong play of Friar goalkeeper Dan Pires. Midway through the first overtime, freshman forward Gregory Strohmann (Wehrheim, Germany) broke free on a long feed from senior back Kobie Johnson (Princeton Junction, NJ), but was stopped by Pires about 10 yards outside the goal area. Seton Hall continued to pressure throughout the remainder of the match, but could not score. Seton Hall outshot the Friars 16-8, including 7-0 in overtime, and held a 13-2 edge in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Derek Martin (St. Louis, MO) made three saves in net in the Pirates' sixth shutout of the season, while Pires made eight saves, several spectacular, in net for Providence.
Next for Men's Soccer: The Pirates will close out the regular
season on Wednesday (Nov. 3) at Fairleigh Dickinson with a 2:00 p.m. match.
BIG EAST TOURNAMENT
The men's team will travel to Piscataway to face Rutgers, the defending
BIG EAST Champion, in the quarterfinals of the eight-team BIG EAST men's
soccer tournament, to be held on Saturday (Nov. 7) at 7:00 p.m. on Yurcak
Field. The Pirates finished league play as the sixth seed,
losing a tiebreaker to Providence for fifth place.

The women's soccer team defeated Providence, 3-0, to close out the regular season on Saturday (Oct. 31) at Owen T. Carroll Field. The Pirates finish in a tie with Syracuse (7-3-1), but the Orangewomen earned the third seed after beating Seton Hall in the regular season meeting. The Pirates will host Boston College on Tuesday (Nov. 3) at 1:00 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Tournament.
Seton Hall is led by BIG EAST Player of the Year candidate Kelly Smith (Garston Watford, England). The junior forward is the nation's leading scorer with 23 goals and eight assists (54 points). Senior Courtney Wood (Neptune, NJ) ranks second on the Pirates in scoring with nine goals and five assists while senior goalkeeper Stacey Nagle (Macungie, PA) has recorded five shutouts this season. Nagle and Wood earned two of the BIG EAST's weekly honors. Wood was named Offensive Player of the Week while Nagle was named the Co-Goalkeeper of the week.
The Pirates closed out the 1998 regular season with a 3-0 victory over Providence. Wood scored two goals to lead Seton Hall to the victory. Freshman Jen Langlois (Charlton, MA) also scored for the Pirates, assisted by Wood.
Seton Hall opened the week with a 3-0 victory over St. John's. Nagle recorded her fifth shutout of the season. The Pirates received goals from Wood and Michelle Tacey, (Wethersfield, CT).
BIG EAST TOURNAMENT
The Pirates, seeded #4 will host #5 Boston College on Tuesday
(Nov. 3) at Owen T. Carroll Field. Match time is 1:00 p.m.
The winner will play the winner of the Villanova-Connecticut match on Friday
(Nov. 6) in Storrs, CT in the BIG EAST Conference semifinals.

The women's volleyball team dropped a 3-2 decision to Rutgers on Thursday (Nov. 29). The Pirates' record falls to 10-12 overall and 3-4 in the BIG EAST.
With the match tied at two games apiece, Rutgers pulled out a 16-14 win in the decisive fifth game. Rutgers captured the opening game, 15-11, but Seton Hall rallied back to tie it with a 15-12 win in game two. After a 15-9 Rutgers win pushed the score to 2-1, Seton Hall fought back to capture the fourth game 16-14, only to fall, 16-14, in the fifth. Seton Hall was led by the play of seniors Jacki Woodford (Prince Frederick, MD) and Leslie Schipper (Kalamazoo, MI). The duo combined for 36 kills and 29 digs in the match. Junior Kadri Kruus (Tallin, Estonia) added nine kills, 46 assists and 16 digs to the cause. As a team, the Pirates hit at a .103 clip (63 kills, 43 errors, 194 attempts), while the Scarlet Knights hit .267.
NEXT FOR THE PIRATES: Seton Hall hosts St. John's and Connecticut this weekend. The Pirates play the Red Storm on Saturday (Nov. 7) at 1:00 p.m. The Huskies come into Walsh Gym on Sunday (Nov. 8) for a 6:00 p.m. match.

Senior Anthony DeBenedictis (Roselle Park, NJ) ran to a third-place finish at the 1998 BIG EAST Cross Country Championships, held on Friday (Oct. 30) at Franklin Park in Boston, MA. DeBenedictis clocked a 23:53 to finish just 16 seconds behind top finisher Ben Noad of Providence (23:37). Providence's Keith Kelly took second with a time of 23:44. As a team the Pirates captured ninth place with 274 points. Providence took first with 50 points, while Georgetown (75 pts.) and Notre Dame (81 pts.) rounded out the top three spots. Junior David Lawler (Lynnfield, MA) was the next Seton Hall finisher, placing 73rd with a time of 26:28.
On the women's side, Seton Hall finished 13th as a team with a point total of 367. Villanova took first place with 40 points, while Georgetown finished second with 53. Senior Marissa DeFreese (Rahway, NJ) was the top Pirate finisher, racing to a 80th place finish with a time of 19:39.

GOLF
Junior Scott Hawley (Shrewsbury, MA) shot a nine-over par 151 to place
third at the 1998 BIG EAST Golf Championship, played Saturday and Sunday
(Oct. 31-Nov. 1), at TPC Avenel. As a team, the Pirates placed fourth
with an aggregate score of 622, eight strokes behind first place Georgetown,
which closed the two-day event with a score of 614. Notre Dame (617)
and St. John's (617) tied for second place. Freshman Andreas Huber
of Georgetown was the individual medalist, shooting a one-under 141, while
Notre Dame's Willie Kent shot a 148 to take second.
Sophomore Eugene Smith (Glen Ridge, NJ) was the next Pirate finisher,
placing seventh with a score of 155. Seniors Mike Costigan (London,
Ontario) and Clark Topping (Hyattsville, MD) tied for 13th place with scores
of 158.
Head Coach Richard Distlerath earned BIG EAST Coach of the Year
honors, as selected by his peers.

MEN'S & WOMEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING
The women's swimming & diving team defeated Marist, 130-113 on Saturday (Oct. 31) at a meet held at the Arthur E. Imperatore Natatorium. Freshman Maran Lougheed (Stouffville, Ontario) captured victories in the 200-yard individual medley and 200-yard breaststroke with times of 2:11.85 and 2:24.34, respectively. Junior Katie Kelleher (North Reading, MA) captured the one-meter and three-meter diving events with scores of 249.96 and 249.9. The Pirates improve their record to 2-1.
The men's team dropped a 133-108 decision to Marist. Freshman Mark Arzaga (Toronto, Ontario) captured victories in the 200-yard individual medley (1:56.12), the 200-yard butterfly (1:53.69) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:10.52). Senior Damon Small (Philadelphia, PA) posted victories in the 50-yard freestyle (21.75) and 100-yard freestyle (47.56). The men's record drops to 1-2.
NEXT FOR THE PIRATES: Seton Hall hosts a dual meet with St. Peter's and Howard on Wednesday (Nov. 18). The meet begins at 5:30 p.m.

MEN'S BASKETBALL (Exhibition)
The men's basketball team defeated Marathon Basketball, 83-69, on Saturday
(Oct. 31) in an exhibition. The Pirates were led by senior forward
Duane Jordan (New York, NY), who scored 16 points and pulled down 14 rebounds,
and junior guard Gary Saunders (New York, NY), who also scored 16. Junior
Shaheen Holloway (Queens, NY) chipped in 14 points, and added nine assists.
Freshman center Charles Manga (Cameroon, Africa) had 12 rebounds in the
win.
NEXT FOR SETON HALL: The Pirates will host Team Fokus in exhibition action on Tuesday (Nov. 3) before travelling to Indianapolis, IN, where the Pirates will open the 1998-99 season against Indiana, on Saturday (Nov. 7) in the NABC Classic. Game time is 4:30 p.m. The Pirates will then face Valparaiso in the second game of the classic on Sunday (Nov. 8) at 7:00 p.m.
