MEN'S SOCCER (11-4-4, 5-3-3)
Seton Hall dropped a 3-1 overtime decision at Rutgers in the quarterfinal
round of the BIG EAST Tournament on Saturday (Nov. 7). Earlier in
the week, the Pirates closed out the regular season with a 2-0 victory
over Fairleigh Dickinson. Seton Hall finishes the season with a record
of 11-4-4 overall and 5-3-3 in the BIG EAST.
Junior midfielder Fausto Klinger (Kearney, NJ) scored the Pirates'
lone goal of the quarterfinal match. The Pirates were outshot 28-12
in the match and trailed in corner kicks, 8-2. Senior goalkeeper
Derek Martin (St. Louis, MO) stopped a career-high 13 shots.
On Tuesday (Nov. 3) the Pirates closed out the regular season
with a 2-0 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson. Freshman forward Gregory
Strohmann (Wehrheim, Germany) and Klinger scored in the first and second
halves respectively and Martin picked up his second consecutive shutout
in goal. The Pirates outshot the Knights 14-10.
Next for Men's Soccer: The Pirates await the possibility of an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Selections will be made Sunday (Nov. 15).

The women's soccer team ended its 1998 campaign losing to Boston College 1-0 in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Tournament. The Pirates end their season with a record of 11-6-1 overall and 7-3-1 in the BIG EAST.
Junior forward Kelly Smith (Garston Watford, England) was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year. The unanimous decision was announced on Thursday (Nov. 5) at the annual BIG EAST Conference Soccer Awards Dinner. It was the second consecutive year that Smith has earned the conference's top honor. Last season, Smith was named both the Offensive Player of the Year and the Rookie of the Year, becoming the first athlete in conference history in any sport to earn those awards in the same season. Smith, the nation's leading scorer, totaled 24 goals and eight assists for 56 points in 17 games this season. She had seven multiple-goal games this year, including four hat tricks. The English National Team member tied her own school record with four goals in one match against Pittsburgh, and also tied her school single season scoring record with 56 points. She also had five game-winning goals on the year.
Other Seton Hall All-Conference Selections included senior Courtney Wood (Neptune, NJ), who was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team and classmate Stacey Nagle (Macungie, PA), who garnered All-BIG EAST Second Team honors. Freshman Brigid Sullivan (Philadelphia, PA) was named to the BIG EAST All-Rookie Team.

VOLLEYBALL (10-14, 3-6)
The women's volleyball team dropped two BIG EAST home matches
last week. The Pirates lost to St. John's 3-0 on Saturday (Nov. 7)
and dropped a 3-0 decision to Connecticut on Sunday (Nov. 8). The
Pirates' record falls to 10-14 overall and 3-6 in the BIG EAST.
Senior Jacki Woodford (Prince Frederick, MD) had team-high 11 kills
against the Red Storm and hit at a .235 clip. Junior Kadri Kruus
(Tallin, Estonia) had 20 assists for the Pirates and a match-high 15 digs.
Against Connecticut, the Pirates were led by Kruus' 31 assists and
10 digs. Senior Leslie
Schipper(Kalamazoo, MI) had a team-high nine kills.
NEXT FOR THE PIRATES: Seton Hall have three road games this week against Manhattan on Wednesday (Nov. 11) for a 7:00 pm match, Georgetown on Saturday (Nov. 14) for a 5:00 pm match, and West Virginia on Sunday (Nov. 15). Match time is 2:00 pm.

MEN'S TENNIS
The men's tennis team competed in the ITA Tournament on Thursday-Sunday
(Nov. 5-8) at University of Pennsylvania.
Freshman Alex Militec (Belgrade, Yugoslavia) advanced to the
third round of the tournament before losing to John Beardsley of Yale.
Militec defeated Brian Akers of St. Francis, 6-1, 6-2 and Cornell's Josh
Benjamin, 6-4, 6-1 to advance to the third round.

The duo of Pille Arike (Tallinn, Estonia) and Laura McCracken (Greystones, Ireland) defeated Columbia's Chang and Weintraub, 8-5, in the first round of the Eastern Regional Championships on Friday (Nov. 6), but dropped an 8-5 decision to Richmond's Hawley and Cascarilla.

MEN'S BASKETBALL (0-2)
The men's basketball team dropped two games last week to open
the 1998-99 season. The Pirates traveled to the RCA Dome in Indianapolis,
IN to compete in the NABC Classic. Seton Hall dropped an 83-69 decision
to Indiana on Saturday (Nov. 7) and lost to Valparaiso, 64-54, on Sunday
(Nov. 8).
On Saturday, junior guard Gary Saunders (New York, NY) scored
29 points for the Pirates on 10-of-16 shooting. Senior tri-captain
Duane Jordan (New York, NY) added 19 points and five rebounds and junior
Shaheen Holloway (Queens, NY) dished off a game-high eight assists.
On Sunday, junior guard Rimas Kaukenas (Vilnius, Lithuania) led
the Pirates with 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Jordan scored 10 points
and pulled down four rebounds. Freshman center Damian Dawkins (Brampton,
Ontario) came off the bench to score five points and collected a team-high
five caroms.
NEXT FOR SETON HALL: The Pirates open their home season when they host St. Peter's on Saturday (Nov. 14) at the Continental Airlines Arena. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

The Seton Hall wrestling team opened the 1998-99 season at the West Point Open, hosted by Army on Sunday (Nov. 9). The meet was based on individual scoring only and did not record team scores. Four Pirates placed in the top three spots in their respective weight classes.
Junior Everett Bell (East Rutherford, NJ) was the top Pirate finisher, placing second in the 174-lb. weight class. Sophomore Mike Settembrino (Lyndhurst, NJ), senior Jerry Barry (Woburn, NJ), and senior John Perna (Belleville, NJ) all finished third in their respective weight classes. Settembrino placed third at 133 lbs., while Barry and Perna wrestled at 141 and 149 lbs., respectively.
