MEN'S BASKETBALL (6-3, 2-0)
The men's basketball team opened the BIG EAST season with two
wins over conference opponents Villanova and Syracuse. The Pirates
defeated Villanova, 73-55 at the Continental Airlines Arena on Wednesday
(Dec. 9) and 13th-ranked Syracuse, 80-64, at the Carrier Dome on Saturday
(Dec. 12) to improve its record to 6-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
Junior Rimas Kaukenas (Vilnius, Lithuania) scored 21 points18 in the
first halfto lead the Pirates over Syracuse. Kaukenas was 5-for-6
from the field, 3-for-4 from beyond the three-point arc, and 8-for-10 from
the free throw line, while collecting team-highs with nine rebounds and
five assists. Classmate Gary Saunders (New York, NY), with 16 points, and
freshman Ty Shine (Augusta, GA) with 11 rounded out the Pirates' double-figure
scorers. Captains Shaheen Holloway (Queens, NY) and Duane Jordan
(New York, NY) added nine points apiece and sophomore Chuck Moore (Plymouth
Meeting, PA) added eight. The victory marks only the second time that the
Pirates have defeated Syracuse in the Carrier Dome, the only other time
coming last season when Seton Hall won by a score of 85-61.
On Wednesday (Dec. 9) the Pirates opened the BIG EAST season defeating
Villanova, 68-55. Seton Hall used balanced scoring and tough defense to
secure the victory. Kaukenas led the Pirates with 15 points4-for-8
from the field, 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Holloway had 14
points and Saunders added 13. Jordan had eight points and a team-high
10 rebounds and Moore, coming off the bench, chipped in nine points.
The 2-0 BIG EAST start is the best for the Pirates since the 1992-93 season.
NEXT FOR SETON HALL: The Pirates host Northwestern on
Saturday (Dec. 19) at the Continental Airlines Arena. Game time is
noon.
KAUKENAS NAMED BIG EAST CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Junior guard Rimas Kaukenas was named BIG EAST Co-Player of the Week
for the week ending December 13. Kaukenas shares the award with Tyrone
Grant of St. John's. Kaukenas was instrumental in the Pirates' victories
over Villanova and 13th-ranked Syracuse. The native of Vilnius, Lithuania
was the team leader in both games with 15 points against Villanova and
21 against Syracuse.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL (3-6)
The women's basketball team dropped a 55-46 decision at Pittsburgh
in its BIG EAST opener Wednesday (Dec. 9). The Pirates' record drops
to 3-6 overall and 0-1 in the BIG EAST.
Sophomore Starr Fuller (Boston, MA) recorded her fourth double-double
of the season with 14 points and ten rebounds. Fuller shot 5-for-11
from the field and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Junior
Erika Ashmon (Montezuma, GA) came off the bench to score nine points, while
senior Danielle Davis (Baltimore, MD) and sophomore Arminda Moreno (Telde,
Canary Islands) added eight points each.
NEXT FOR SETON HALL: The Pirates then have a three-week
hiatus with their next game at Syracuse on Wednesday (Dec. 30) at 7:00
p.m.
MEN'S (3-3) & WOMEN'S (4-2) SWIMMING & DIVING
The women's swim team dropped a 142-98 decision to Columbia on
Wednesday (Dec. 9) in a meet held at Seton Hall.
Freshman Maran Lougheed (Stouffville, Ontario) finished first in the
200-yard breaststroke in 2:27.23, and placed second in the 200-yard individual
medley with a time of 2:12.34). Classmate Elizabeth Ackley (Dracut,
MA) captured wins in the 200-yard butterfly (2:13.97), while junior Tina
Balsan (Highland Mills, NY) was the top finisher in the 200-yard backstroke
with a time of 2:13.38.
NEXT FOR THE PIRATES: Following the Christmas break both
men's and women's teams will travel to Ft. Lauderdale, FL, for winter training
which will run from Jan. 2-11.
WRESTLING
The Seton Hall wrestling team was idle last week.
NEXT FOR THE PIRATES: The Pirates return to action on
January 10, when they travel to Syracuse, NY for the Big Eastern Duals
with American University, Boston College, James Madison, Ohio University,
Pittsburgh, Rutgers, and Syracuse.
MEN'S & WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK
The men's and women's track team hosted the Seton Hall Games
on Sunday (Dec. 13) at the Regan Feildhouse. The Pirates, for the second-consecutive
week, held back many of their top athletes from competition. On the
women's side, Hampton University took first place with 79 points, Long
Island University (76 pts.) and Seton Hall (44 points) rounded out the
top three spots. For the men, Lincoln University emerged victorious
with 70 team points, while Hampton (55 pts.) and Seton Hall (46 pts.) finished
second and third, respectively.
Freshman Jana Burton (Queens, NY) swept the throwing events for the
second-straight week. Burton placed first in the women's weight throw
with a toss of 39'06 and then took first in the shot put with a throw
of 43'1. Burton remains undefeated on the season in both events.
Junior Natasha Clary (Plainfield, NJ) placed second in the 55m high hurdles,
racing to an 8.87 finish. In the 3000m, freshman Debbie Robertson
(Bedford, MA) placed fourth with a time of 11:51.04. Freshman Tamara
Warren (Vero Beach, FL) finished second in the 1000m with a time of 3:27.28
Robertson placed fourth (3:33.08).
For the men, freshman teammates Rob Houston (Warwick, RI) and Mike
Zawlinksi (Norfolk, MA) finished 1-2 in the men's weight throw, as Houston
threw 43'04 and Zawlinksi threw 41'01. Junior David Lawler (Lynnfield,
MA) finished second in the one mile run with a time 4:25.03. Other
top five finishers for the Pirates included sophomore James McGovern (Highlands,
NJ), who placed second in the 3000m with a time of 9:16.46 and freshman
Luis Duarte (Lodi, NJ), who placed fifth in the 1000m run with a time of
2:44.05.
NEXT FOR SETON HALL: Following the Christmas break, the Pirates
return to action January 9 at the Yale Invitational.
