The men's basketball team defeated LaSalle University, 73-55, at Continental Airlines Arena, on Saturday (Dec. 5), to improve its record to 4-3 overall.
Junior Rimas Kaukenas (Vilnius, Lithuania) scored 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the three-point arc, to lead the Pirates. Kaukenas also had nine rebounds, three assists and one steal. Classmate Gary Saunders (New York, NY) notched a double-double with 16 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Junior Shaheen Holloway (Queens, NY) and freshman Ty Shine (Augusta, GA) rounded out the double figure scoring for the Pirates with ten points apiece. Senior tri-captain Duane Jordan (New York, NY) finished with six points, eight rebounds, three blocks and two steals for the Pirates.
NEXT FOR SETON HALL: The Pirates host Villanova in their BIG EAST opener on Wednesday (Dec. 9) at 7:30 p.m. at the Continental Airlines Arena. The Pirates travel to Syracuse on Saturday (Dec. 12) for an 8:00 p.m. match.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL (3-5)
The women's basketball team posted a record of 1-3 last week
defeating Brown, 76-72, but dropping decisions to George Mason, 77-73,
and Holy Cross, 71-65. The Pirates' record drops to 3-5 overall.
On Wednesday (Dec. 2), Starr Fuller's (Boston, MA) game-high
18 points wasn't enough as the Pirates dropped a 77-73 decision to George
Mason at Walsh Gym. Trailing by ten at the half and as much
as 22 in the second half, the Pirates battled back to come within one point
before George Mason pulled away with the victory. Freshman
Toronda Hayes (Columbus, OH) and junior Devon Jefferson (Orange, NJ) each
scored 12 points. Junior Yolanda Rouse (Clewiston, FL) added 11 points
and six assists in the loss.
On Saturday (Dec. 5), the Pirates captured the first round of
the ECAC Holiday Festival, with a 76-72 win over Brown. Sophomore
forward Arminda Moreno (Telde, Canary Islands) led the Pirates with 19
points, while adding nine rebounds and five assists. Rouse chipped
in 18 points, five rebounds and four assists. Fuller had 12 points and
seven rebounds.
In the championship game on Sunday (Dec. 6), the Pirates dropped
a 71-65 decision to Holy Cross. Fuller led the Pirates with 22 points
on 9-of-17 shooting, and 11 reboundsher third double-double of the season.
Moreno added 15 points and freshman Susan Murray (North Mississauga , Ontario)
notched her first collegiate double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Fuller and Moreno were named to the ECAC All-Tournament Team.
NEXT FOR SETON HALL: Seton Hall travels to Pittsburgh
to open its BIG EAST season on Wednesday (Dec. 9). Game time is 7:00
p.m. The Pirates then have a three-week hiatus with their next game
at Syracuse on Wednesday (Dec. 30) at 7:00 p.m.
MEN'S (3-3) & WOMEN'S (4-1) SWIMMING & DIVING
The women's swim team defeated Lafayette, 121-116, while the
men dropped their decision, 123-114 in a meet hosted by Seton Hall on Tuesday
(Dec. 1). The women improve their record to 4-1 on the season while
the men fell to 3-3.
Freshman Maran Lougheed (Stouffville, Ontario) compiled two victories
in the 200-yard individual medley (2:12.54) and the 200-yard breaststroke
(2:24.29). Sophomore Amanda Kline (Green Brooke, NJ) captured the
one-meter diving event with a score of 251.25 while junior Katie Kelleher
(North Reading, MA) scored 263.7 points to clinch the three-meter diving
event.
For the men, sophomore Mark Arzaga (Toronto, Ontario) had wins
in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:10.83) and the 200-yard individual medley
(1:55.10). Senior Damon Small (Philadelphia, PA) was the top finisher
in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events with respective times of 21.90
and 47.73.
Several Pirates competed in the US Open Competition held Thursday-Saturday
(Dec. 3-5). Arzaga placed 10th in the 200-meter butterfly with a time of
2:02.72. Arzaga also teamed with Rich Munson (Maplewood, NJ), Jarrod
Armstrong (Unionville, Ontario) and Small to place sixth in the 400-meter
medley relay with a time of 3:53.13.
NEXT FOR THE PIRATES: Seton Hall's women's team will
host Columbia on Wednesday (Dec. 9) at 6:00 p.m.
WRESTLING
The Seton Hall wrestling team closed the 1998 portion of its
schedule by competing at the prestigious Penn State Open Wrestling Tournament,
held on Sunday (Dec. 6) in University Park, PA. The open, which was
based on individual scoring rather than team results, saw several Pirates
advance in their respective brackets.
At 126, freshman Dave Ilaria (Jersey City, NJ) opened by defeating
Lehigh's James Hamfeldt 20-8 before falling to UNC's Chuck Connors 13-3.
Ilaria then won two matches in the consolation bracket before bowing out
in the semi-finals. Sophomore Peter Weiss (Closter, NJ) won his first two
matches at 149, defeating Chris Steidman 9-5 and Chris Laterra 9-5, both
wrestling unattached, before falling in the third round to Penn State's
Jamar Billman, 2-1. Freshman Mike Klein (Eastpointe, MI) was a double-winner
as well, pinning Keith Helman at the 3:11 mark in his first match and then
pinning Phil Carter at 3:31 in the 157-pound bracket.
Other first-round winners for Seton Hall included freshman Larry
Smashey (Franklin, NJ), who defeated Dave Martinez by fall at the 4:29
mark at 157. Junior Joe Benvenuti (Little Falls, NJ) won his opening round
match at 141, defeating Chris Gammons 6-4 in overtime and junior Everett
Bell (East Rutherford, NJ) defeated Princeton's Anthony DeBartolo by fall
at the 5:54 mark at 174. Junior heavyweight Terrence Eason (Newark,
NJ) rounded out the advancers, defeating Maryland's Paul Fitzmaurice 3-1
in overtime.
NEXT FOR THE PIRATES: The Pirates return to action on
January 10, when they travel to Syracuse, NY for the Big Eastern Duals
with American University, Boston College, James Madison, Ohio University,
Pittsburgh, Rutgers, and Syracuse.
MEN'S & WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK
The men's and women's track team opened the indoor season by
hosting the 1998 Seton Hall Open I, held Sunday (Dec. 6) at the Regan Fieldhouse
at Seton Hall. Both the men's and women's teams placed fourth, despite
having many top athletes sitting out the day's competition.
The women scored 28 points, led by freshman Jana Burton (Queens,
NY), who was a double-winner for the Pirates, taking first in the shot
put with a throw of 41'11 and first in the weight throw with a mark of
33'5. In the mile event, freshman Tamara Warren (Vero Beach, FL)
took third with a time of 5:54.02 and her classmate Debbie Robertson (Bedford,
NJ) finished fifth with a time of 6:00.05.
The men's team scored 22 points to capture fourth place.
Freshman Luis Duarte (Lodi, NJ) and sophomore Jason McGovern (Highlands,
NJ) finished third and fourth, respectively, in the one-mile event. Duarte
clocked a time of 4:42.50 while McGovern crossed the line at 4:43.24.
Freshman Michael Zawlinksi (Norfolk, MA) finished second in the shot put
with a toss of 48'4 ¼.
NEXT FOR SETON HALL: The teams return to action Sunday
(Dec. 13) when it hosts the Seton Hall Games at the Regan Fieldhouse.
