SPORTS ROUNDUP
The 13th-ranked men's soccer team posted a 1-0-1 record last week. The Pirates played to a 1-1 tie against Princeton and defeated St. Peter's, 8-0, improving their record to 6-1-1 overall and 2-1 in the BIG EAST.
On Saturday (Sept. 26), the Pirates scored three goals in the first 3:20 of the second half to build a 5-0 lead on their way to an 8-0 shutout win over St. Peter's at Owen T. Carroll Field. The eight goals mark the highest single-match total since the Pirates defeated Penn, 9-3, on September 13, 1995. Freshman forward Gregory Strohmann (Weirheim, Germany) and junior midfielder Fausto Klinger (Kearny, NJ) each had two goals and an assist to lead the Pirates over the Peacocks. Junior Peter Scavo (Raritan, NJ) and sophomore midfielder Brian Cuddy (North Brunswick, NJ) each had a goal and two assists. Rounding out the scoring for the Pirates were junior Shaun Nicholson (St. Louis, MO), who tallied his first of the season, and sophomore midfielder Arda Altincatal (Bogota, NJ). Senior goalkeepers Derek Martin (St. Louis, MO) and Seth Cohen (Mountain Lakes, NJ) combined for the shutout.
On Wednesday (Sept. 23) Scavo scored on a penalty kick at the 78:45 mark to give the Pirates a 1-0 edge over Princeton, but Princeton's Matt Striebel knocked home a rebound of his own shot to tie the match at 85:23. The two teams then played through two 15-minute scoreless overtime periods. Seton Hall outshot the Tigers 13-8 and held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks. Martin made four stops in net for the Pirates.
Next for Men's Soccer: The Pirates host Rutgers on Wednesday (Sept. 30) at 3:00 p.m. and Syracuse on Saturday (Oct. 3) at 1:00 p.m. Both matches will take place at Owen T. Carroll Field.

Alex Militec (Belgrad, Yugoslavia) advanced to the Flight A singles championship of the West Point Singles Championship held Friday-Sunday (Sept. 25-27) before losing to St. John's Erik Scharf, 6-0, 6-1. Militec defeated Andre Vanier of St. John's, 6-3, 6-4 and Army's Wes White, 7-6(7), 6-3 on his way to the championship match.
In the Flight B consolation singles, sophomore Mark Vanderelst (Hamilton, Ontario) lost to Rutgers' Takashi Zetsu, 6-3, 6-2, in the championship match.

WOMEN'S TENNIS
Sophomore Pille Arike (Tallin, Estonia) advanced to the consolation singles championship of the Cissie Leary Invitational held Friday-Saturday (Sept. 25-36). Arike was unable to finish the match against Penn's Brooke Herman because of injury. She defeated Julia Feldman, 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 and Corin Esterowitz, 6-2, 6-4, both from Penn, to advance to the consolation final.
Junior Laura McCracken (Greystones, Ireland) lost to Penn State's Rebecca Ho, 7-6(3), 6-3, in the quarterfinals.

The Pirates finished the week with an overall record of 5-2-1, 2-2-1 in the BIG EAST. On Wednesday (Sept. 23), junior forward Kelly Smith (Garston Watford Herts, England) scored three goals to lead the Pirates over Lafayette, 4-1. It marked the fourth hat trick of her career. Senior Courtney Wood (Neptune, NJ) opened the scoring for the Pirates at 10:53 with an unassisted goal. Wood then assisted on Smith's first goal 30 seconds later. Senior goalkeeper Stacey Nagle (Macungie, PA) had six saves on the day. On Sunday (Sept. 27), Kelly Smith's two goals and two assists were not enough to overtake Syracuse as the Orangewomen outscored the Pirates, 5-4. Syracuse scored four first half goals and took a 4-2 lead into the half. Sophomore Marybeth Ferrigno's (Washingtonville, NY) goal in the final minutes of the first half off an assist by Kelly Smith closed the gap for the Pirates. Syracuse scored at the 62:38 mark and the Pirates made a bid for a comeback late in the match when freshman Kimberly Hogan (Chagrin Falls, OH) scored her first career goal at 86:08 and Smith scored her second goal of the match from Wood. It marked Smith's fourth multiple-goal game of the season.

The Pirates finished the week with an overall record of 7-7. On Tuesday (Sept. 22) senior Jacki Woodford (Prince Frederick, MD) and freshman Paige Ellertson (Mt. Holly Springs, PA) combined for 16 kills and 17 assists and junior Kadri Kruus (Tallin, Estonia) contributed a match-high 20 assists to lead Seton Hall to a 3-0 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson. The two teams opened with a back-and-forth battle, as FDU took a brief 12-10 lead. The Pirates, behind the serving of freshman Nancy Holm (Mission Kills, KS) rebounded to capture the opening game, 15-13. In the second game, Seton Hall took advantage of seven service points from Kruus to cruise to a 15-5 win. Seton Hall then secured the third and final game by the score of 15-7. As a team, the Pirates hit at a .200 clip (29 kills, 13 errors, 80 attempts). Seton Hall placed fourth at the Rutgers University Invitational this past weekend (Sept. 25-26). The Pirates dropped a 3-1 decision to Rutgers, and then lost to the University of New Hampshire and Liberty University by scores of 3-2. Woodford was named to the All-Tournament team. In Friday's match with Rutgers, Seton Hall got out of the gate slowly, dropping the first game 15-1. The Pirates rallied back, however, taking the second game by the score of 15-12. Rutgers then closed out the match by winning the final two games, 15-4, 15-13. Ellertson and Woodford led the Pirates with nine kills and five digs apiece, while Kruus collected 17 assists. On Saturday morning, Seton Hall lost a wild, five-game match to New Hampshire. After taking a 2-1 lead, the Pirates lost the final two games, including a 20-18 decision in the match's final game. Woodford paced the Pirate attack with 23 kills and 23 digs, while senior outside hitter Leslie Schipper (Kalamazoo, MI) added 17 kills and 11 digs. Ellertson also played well, contributing 12 kills and 11digs. Kruus set a career-high with 63 assists. In the final match of the tournament, Seton Hall dropped a 3-2 decision to Liberty University. Woodford led the team with a match-high 19 kills and 16 digs, while Schipper added 15 kills and 12 digs. Kruus tallied 51 assists.

DeBenedictis raced to the individual championship with a time of 24.55.5, marking his third consecutive first-place finish. Seniors Ned Brooks (North Babylon, NY) and Derwin Jones (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad) were the next two Pirate finishers, placing 14th and 31st, respectively. Brooks posted a time of 27:00, while Jones clocked a 28:04.
