January 19, 1999 Sports Information, 973-761-9493 MEN'S BASKETBALL (11-5, 5-2)
The men's basketball team defeated West Virginia, 63-58 in overtime, last week to improve its record to 11-5 overall and 5-2 in the BIG EAST.
On Wednesday (Jan. 13), the Pirates needed overtime to defeat the Mountaineers, 63-58, at the Continental Airlines Arena. Sophomore guard Chuck Moore (Plymouth Meeting, PA) scored a team-high 14 points, including a three-pointer with 2:30 left in the overtime period to tie the score at 58-58. Junior Gary Saunders (New York, NY) had 13 points and four rebounds and Shaheen Holloway (Queens, NY) added 12 points, six rebounds and five assists. Ty Shine (Augusta, GA) came off the bench to score 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting. With the game tied, 53-53, the Pirates outscored the Moutaineers, 10-5, in the overtime period to secure the win. With the win, Seton Hall remains undefeated at home this season.
NEXT FOR SETON HALL: The Pirates kick off a three-game road trip beginning with Notre Dame on Tuesday (Jan. 19) at the Joyce Convocation Center at 7:30 pm. The game will be televised locally on CN8. The Pirates then travel to Connecticut on Saturday (Jan. 23) for an 8:00 pm match. The game will be televised locally on Channel 9 (WWOR).
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL (5-11, 2-6)
The women's basketball team dropped two BIG EAST games last week.
The Pirates fell to Connecticut, 101-41, and lost a 64-52 decision against
Syracuse. Seton Hall's record drops to 5-11 overall and 2-6 in BIG
EAST play.
On Saturday (Jan. 9), Syracuse built a 31-22 halftime lead and eventually
led by as many as 16 points (43-27 with 13:58 remaining), before the Pirates
staged a comeback to pull within six, 52-46, before Syracuse hit
10-of-12 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory. Sophomore
Arminda Moreno (Telde, Canary Islands) led the Pirates with 16 points.
Sophomore guard Naimah Smith (Elizabeth, NJ) had six points and a career-high
nine assists. Erika Ashmon (Montezuma, GA) added six points and three
steals and Starr Fuller (Boston, MA) finished with six points and a team-high
seven rebounds.
On Wednesday (Jan. 13), the Pirates dropped a 101-41 decision
to second-ranked Connecticut in Storrs, CTthe worst loss in the school
history. Fuller led the Pirates with eight points and four rebounds.
NEXT FOR SETON HALL: The Pirates host No. 9 Notre Dame
on Wednesday (Jan. 20) at 7:30 p.m. in Walsh Gym. The game will be televised
locally on CN8 on tape delay at 9:30. The Pirates travel to Georgetown
on Saturday (Jan. 23) for a 2:00 p.m. game.
MEN'S (4-3) & WOMEN'S (6-2) SWIMMING & DIVING
The Seton Hall men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept
Rider University on Saturday (Jan 16), in Lawrenceville, NJ. The
men's team improved to 4-3 with a 125.5-108 victory, while the women advanced
to 6-2 overall with a 134-109 win.
Seniors Rich Munson (Maplewood, NJ) and Damon Small (Philadelphia,
PA) and sophomore Mark Arzaga (Toronto, Canada), who set two records, were
all double winners for Seton Hall. Munson took first place in the
200-yard freestyle, clocking a 1:47.39 to edge second-place finisher Shaun
Lyons of Rider. Senior Chris Randall (Lexington, MA) placed fourth
in the race for the Pirates, finishing with a time of 1:56.76. Munson
also captured top honors in the 200-yard backstroke, swimming to a 1:59.02
finish. Small took first in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of
49.34, while teammate Bruce Van Velzor (So. Columbia, CT) took fourth in
52.05. Small then finished first in the 50 yard freestyle, racing
to a 21.80 finish. Arzaga continued his dominance in the 400 IM,
pacing the field with a time of 4:15.11, establishing a new pool record
at Rider. Freshman Peter Economou (Howell, NJ) finished third with
a time of 4:26.22. Arzaga also took first in the 200-yard butterfly,
establishing a Rider record with a time of 1:53.25. Economou finished
second to Arzaga with a time of 1:57.70. Sophomore Jarrod Armstrong
(Unionville, Ontario) was the other top Seton Hall finisher, clocking a
2:12.41 in the 200- yard breaststroke.
On the women's side, junior Katie Kelleher (North Reading, MA) and
freshman Maran Lougheed (Stoufville, Ontario) were double winners, while
freshman Katie Crombie (West Chester, PA) finished with a first and second
place finish. Kelleher swept the diving events, finishing first in both
the one-meter and three-meter dives. Kelleher scored a 231.15 in
the one-meter to edge sophomore teammate Amanda Kline (Green Brook, NJ).
In the three-meter dive, Kelleher and Kline again finished 1-2 with respective
scores of 260.22 and 239.70. Lougheed took first in the 200-yard
breaststroke with a time of 2:28.77 and then paced the field in the 400
IM with a time of 4:55.12. Crombie finished first in the 50-yard
freestyle with a time of 26.04 and finished second 100-yard freestyle,
clocking 56.50. Junior Tara Richards (Brockport, NY) finished first
with a time of 2:16.58 in the 200-yard butterfly, while freshman Elizabeth
Ackley (Dracut, MA) finished second with a time of 2:18.06.
NEXT FOR THE PIRATES: The Pirates travel to Rutgers for
the tri-meet with St. John's on Saturday (Jan. 23) at 1:00 p.m.
WRESTLING (3-4, 2-1 ECWA)
The Seton Hall wrestling team won two of three matches this past
weekend, improving to 3-4 overall and 2-1 in ECWA action.
The team opened the weekend with a 24-13 win over Boston University
on Friday (Jan. 15). Junior Terrence Eason (Newark, NJ) opened with
a 5-3 win at 285 and freshman Dave Ilaria (Jersey City, NJ) followed with
a 12-11 win at 125 to give Seton Hall a 6-0 lead. Back-to-back wins
by sophomore Mike Settembrino (Lyndhurst, NJ) and junior Joe Benvenuti
(Little Falls, NJ) extended the lead to 15-0. Junior Paul Wyka (Fair
Lawn, NJ) won his match at 165 by the score of 8-3 and Marc Bautis (Lyndhurst,
NJ) won by forfeit at 197 to close the scoring.
The following day, Seton Hall defeated Boston College by the score
of 34-9 and dropped a 28-3 decision to Drexel. Wyka opened the BC
match with a pin at :18 to give Seton Hall a 6-0 lead and then junior Everett
Bell (East Rutherford, NJ), freshman Greg Sawyer (Franklinville, NJ) and
Bautis posted successive wins to extend the lead to 17-0. Ilaria
his match at 125 by forfeit and Settembrino took an 8-2 decision to give
Seton Hall a 26-6 lead. Benvenuti closed the day with a forfeit win
at 141.
The lone win for the Pirates in the 28-3 loss to Drexel, was scored
by Bell, who captured a 4-2 win at 174.
NEXT FOR THE PIRATES: The Pirates travel to Rutgers for
a 7:00 p.m. match on Friday (Jan. 22).
MEN'S & WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK
The men's and women's track and field teams competed at the prestigious
New York Sports Museum Collegiate Invitational, held at the Armory Track
and Field Center on Saturday (Jan. 16). The women's team took first
place with 97 points, edging runner-up Ohio State (90 pts.). The
men's team finished in fifth place, collecting 55.5 points. University
of Washington took first with 122 points, while Ohio State finished second
with 85.
The women were led by sophomores Nolle Graham (Bronx, NY) and
Erica Broomfield (Markham, Ontario). Graham and Broomfield ran one-two
in the 60m dash, with times of 7.49 and 7.50, respectively. Graham
also captured a second-place finish in the long jump, measuring 6.02 meters,
.08 meters shy of first-place finisher Angie Brown of George Mason.
Also placing well for the women was senior Harriette Gardner (Bayshore,
NY) who jumped 12.12 meters to take first place in the triple jump.
Senior Audrey Griffin (Hollis, NY) took first in the 800m run, clocking
2:12.54. Freshman Jana Burton (Queens, NY) took seventh in the 20lb.
weight throw with a toss of 12.83m, while her throw of 13.10m in the shot
put earned her fifth-place.
On the men's side, senior Ned Brooks (North Babylon, NY) captured first
in the 800m run, clocking 1:49.82, while junior teammate Marcel Burke (Albany,
NY) finished third with a time of 1:51.82. Freshman Mike Roberts
(Wilmington, DE) was second in the triple jump with a distance of 14.03m,
while securing an eighth-place finish in the 60m hurdles with a time of
8.55. Senior Derwin Jones (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad) took third in
the 400m dash with a time of 48.31. In addition, the 4x400
relay team of Jones, Burke, Brooks and sophomore Ken Nelson (Port Huron,
MI) placed third with a time of 3:13.05.
NEXT FOR SETON HALL: The Pirates travel to Virginia Tech
for the Virginia Tech Invitational on Saturday-Sunday (Jan. 30-31).
