January 25, 1999 Sports Information, 973-761-9493 MEN'S BASKETBALL (11-7, 5-4)
The men's basketball team dropped two BIG EAST road games last week. The Pirates lost to Notre Dame, 59-56 and top ranked Connecticut, 62-47. Seton Hall's record falls to 11-7 overall and 5-4 in the BIG EAST.
Junior Gary Saunders (New York, NY) had a team-high 15 points and nine rebounds in the Pirates' 59-56 loss to Notre Dame at the Joyce Center on Tuesday (Jan. 19). Sophomore guard Chuck Moore (Plymouth Meeting, PA) continued his impressive play off the bench with 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting2-of-5 from beyond the three-point arc. Shaheen Holloway (Queens, NY) added seven points and seven assists for the Pirates.
On Saturday (Jan. 23), Holloway scored 16 points and Rimas Kaukenas (Vilnius, Lithuania) added 14, but the Pirates dropped a 62-47 decision to the top ranked Connecticut Huskies. Senior Duane Jordan (New York, NY) finished with eight points, six rebounds and two blocks.
NEXT FOR SETON HALL: The Pirates travel to Miami on Wednesday (Jan. 27) for an 7:30 p.m. game against the Hurricanes. Seton Hall then returns home to take on Syracuse on Saturday (Jan. 30) at the Continental Airlines Arena. Game time is 8:00 and will be televised locally by Channel 9 (WWOR).
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL (5-13, 2-8)
The women's basketball team dropped two BIG EAST games last week.
The Pirates fell to Notre Dame, 87-47, and Georgetown, 78-73. Seton
Hall's record drops to 5-13 overall and 2-8 in BIG EAST play.
On Wednesday (Jan. 20), the Pirates dropped an 87-47 decision to No.
9 Notre Dame. Sophomore Arminda Moreno (Telde, Canary Islands) and freshman
Erika Ashmon (Montezuma, GA) led the Pirates with nine points apiece.
Moreno also recorded six steals. Danielle Davis (Baltimore, MD) pulled
down a team-high nine rebounds, while Stacey Townsend (South Orange, NJ)
scored seven points on 3-for-4 shooting.
On Saturday (Jan. 23) the Pirates fell to Georgetown, 78-73, at the
McDonough Arena. Junior Yolanda Rouse (Clewiston, FL) scored a career-high
20 points on 8-of-18 shooting. She also had four rebounds, five assists
and four steals. Sophomore Starr Fuller (Boston, MA) finished with
17 points on 7-of-15 scoring, four rebounds and four steals. Moreno
had another solid performance with 13 points, four rebounds, two assists
and two steals.
NEXT FOR SETON HALL: The Pirates host Boston College
on Wednesday (Jan. 27) at 7:30 p.m. and West Virginia on Sunday (Jan. 31)
at 2:30 p.m. in Walsh Gym. The Pirates-Mountaineers game will be
televised live locally on CN8.
MEN'S (4-6) & WOMEN'S (7-4) SWIMMING & DIVING
The Seton Hall men's swimming and diving team posted an 0-3 record
last week with losses to Yale (129-87), Rutgers (151-74) and St. John's
(146-77). The women's team had a 1-2 record last week losing to Yale
(123-108) and Rutgers (135.5-104.5), but defeating St. John's (119-116).
On Sunday (Jan. 24), the men were led by Rich Munson (Maplewood,
NJ) who placed first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:43.45,
and third in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.17. Sophomore Mark Arzaga
(Toronto, Ontario) garnered a second place finish in the 200-yard individual
medley with a time of 1:56.24.
Freshman Maran Lougheed (Stouffville, Ontario) led the women's
team with a victory in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:15.18.
She also notched a second place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke
(2:26.75) and third in the 100-yard freestyle (55.81).
On Saturday (Jan. 23) the men's team lost a tri-meet to Rutgers
and St. John's. The women's team split the tri-meet losing to Rutgers
but defeating St. John's.
NEXT FOR THE PIRATES: The Pirates travel to Iona for
a 4:00 p.m. meet on Monday (Feb. 1).
WRESTLING (3-5, 2-2 ECWA)
The Seton Hall wrestling team dropped a 27-9 decision to in-state
rival Rutgers University in ECWA action on Friday (Jan. 22) in Piscataway,
NJ. With the loss, the Pirates fall to 3-5 overall and 2-2 in conference
action.
The lone winners for Seton Hall were junior Everett Bell (East Rutherford,
NJ/Becton Regional) who defeated Paul Castellini 4-3 at 174. Bell,
with the win, improved to 16-8 overall this season, tying him with freshman
Dave Ilaria (Jersey City, NJ/St. Peter's Prep) for the team lead in wins.
Also, sophomore Mike Settembrino (Lyndhurst, NJ/Lyndhurst) pinned Rutgers'
Joe Sorrentino at the 4:20 mark at 133 in the final match of the day.
Bell and Settembrino both improved to 3-1 in ECWA action.
NEXT FOR THE PIRATES: The Pirates host Hofstra and Wagner
on Sunday (Jan. 31) at 6:00 p.m.
MEN'S & WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK
The Seton Hall men's and women's track and field teams competed
at the Greater Boston Invitational, held on Sunday (Jan. 24) at Harvard
University. The meet was based on individual results rather than
team scoring with several Pirates turning in top finishes and qualifying
marks.
For the women, sophomore Erica Broomfield (Markham, Ontario) led the
way with a first place finish in the 200 meter dash, clocking an NCAA provisional-qualifying
time of 24.02. Broomfield and freshman teammate Nolle Graham (Bronx,
NY) ran 2-3 in the 55-meter dash, as Broomfield finished with a time of
6.96. She then closed the day by leading the 4x400 team, which also
included sophomores Heather Smith (Chicago, IL) and Teneka Horton (Chicago,
IL) and senior Audrey Griffin (Hollis, NY), to a first place finish with
an NCAA provisional-qualifying time of 3:42.73. Also, freshman Michelle
Henry (Scarborough, Ontario) finished second in the 800m hurdles with a
time of 2:18.4, while Griffin finished fifth in the 800m run, checking
in with a time of 2:15.80. Freshman weight thrower Jana Burton (Queens,
NY) posted another solid showing, finishing third in the shot put with
a throw of 43'08.5 and fifth in the 20lb. weight throw (45'3).
The 4x220 relay team of junior Natasha Clary (Plainfield, NJ), senior Harriette
Gardner (Bayshore, NY), junior Nena Moore (Cherry Hill, NJ) and Graham
finished second with a time of 1:42.42. Gardner also finished third
in the triple jump with a distance of 41'02.
On the men's side, the 4x800 relay team, comprised of senior Brad Barket
(Dallas, PA), freshman James Karanja (Thika, Kenya), junior David Lawler
(Lynnfield, MA) and junior Marcel Burke (Albany, NY), finished first with
a time of 7:49.76, while the team of senior Derwin Jones (Port-of-Spain,
Trinidad), freshman Sheldon Melbourne (Kingston, Jamaica), senior Ned Brooks
(North Babylon, NY) and sophomore Ken Nelson (Port Huron, MI) placed third
in the 4x400 relay, clocking 3:14.39. Brooks also placed second in
the 800 meter run, clocking an NCAA provisional time of 1:49.13.
Other top finishers included senior Brad Barket (Dallas, PA), who finished
sixth in the mile with a time of 4:20.59 and freshman Michael Zawlinski
(Norfolk, MA), whose toss of 46'925 in the shot put placed him third.
Burke, Karanja and Melbourne all qualified for the IC4As in the 800m run.
NEXT FOR SETON HALL: The Pirates travel to Boston for
the Terrier Classic on Saturday-Sunday (Jan. 30-31).
