February 15, 1999 Sports Information, 973-761-9493 MEN'S BASKETBALL (12-12, 6-9)
The men's team split a pair of BIG EAST Conference games last week. The Pirates defeated Pittsburgh, 77-61, snapping a
six-game losing streak, then lost to No. 2 Connecticut, 53-48. With the split the Pirates finished the week with a 12-12 overall
record, 6-9 in conference play.
On Monday (Feb. 8), sophomore guard Chuck Moore (Plymouth Meeting, PA) scored 22 points on 7-of-9 shooting6-for-8 from
three point rangeto lead the Pirates to a 77-61 victory over Pittsburgh at the Continental Airlines Arena. Freshman guard Ty
Shine (Augusta, GA) had 18 points and five assists, starting in place of the injured Shaheen Holloway (Queens, NY). Senior
forward Duane Jordan (New York, NY) added 12 points and junior Rimas Kaukenas (Vilnius, Lithuania) rounded out the
double-figure scoring for the Pirates with 11 points. Freshman center Charles Manga (Cameroon, Africa) led the team with eight
rebounds.
On Saturday (Feb. 13), the Pirates came within four points of upsetting 2nd-ranked Connecticut, dropping a 53-48 decision. The
Pirates took a one-point lead, 28-27, into the intermission and tough defense denied the Huskies a field goal until 10:38 mark of the
second half. Connecticut scored only six field goals in the second half. The Pirates were led by Kaukenas who registered a
double-double with 18 points and ten rebounds. Junior Gary Saunders (New York, NY) had 15 points and six rebounds and
Jordan added four points and a team-high 12 caroms.
NEXT FOR SETON HALL: The Pirates return to action on Sunday (Feb. 21) in their home finale against Rutgers at the
Continental Airlines Arena. Game time is Noon and televised locally on WWOR (Channel 9).
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL (6-18, 3-13)
The Pirates split a pair of BIG EAST Conference home games last week.
The Pirates snapped an eight-game losing streak with a
62-53 win over Pittsburgh, but dropped an 82-77 decision to Providence.
Seton Hall finished the week with an overall record of
6-18, 3-13 in the BIG EAST.
On Wednesday (Feb. 9), sophomore Arminda Moreno (Telde, Canary Islands)
led the Pirates over Pittsburgh with 16 points on
5-of-13 shooting. Junior Yolanda Rouse (Clewiston, FL) added 15 points
and freshman Stacey Townsend (South Orange, NJ)
finished with 10 points and seven assists. Freshman Susan Murray
(Mississauga, Ontario) had a game-high 11 rebounds. The win
snapped an eight-game losing streak for the Pirates.
On Sunday (Feb. 14), the Pirates dropped an 82-77 decision to Providence,
despite four Pirates scoring in double figures. Rouse
had 19 points to lead the Pirates along with six rebounds. Moreno
and sophomore Starr Fuller (Boston, MA) added 16 points
apiece with Fuller snaring 11 boards. Murray rounded out the double-figure
scorers with 10 points. Freshman Toronda Hayes
(Columbus, OH) came off the bench to score seven points and pull down
four rebounds.
NEXT FOR SETON HALL: The Pirates return to action on
Wednesday (Feb. 17) when they host Miami in their home finale.
Game time is 7:30 p.m. Seton Hall then closes out the regular
season at Rutgers for a game on Saturday (Feb. 20) at 2:00 p.m.
MEN'S (5-6) & WOMEN'S (8-4) SWIMMING & DIVING
The Seton Hall University men's and women's swimming and diving teams
were idle last week.
NEXT FOR THE PIRATES: The Pirates will return to action
Thursday-Friday (Feb. 25-26) at the BIG EAST Championships.
WRESTLING (7-9, 4-3 ECWA)
The Pirates posted a 2-1 record last week with wins over Millersville,
27-12, and Princeton, 33-14, but dropping a 24-15 decision to
George Mason. The Pirates improve their record to 7-9 overall
and 4-3 in the ECWA.
On Sunday (Feb. 14) the Pirates traveled to Princeton for a tri-meet
with Princeton and Millersville. The Pirates captured both
matches with Mark Bautis (Lyndhurst, NJ) picking up wins in both matches
at 197 lbs. Bautis defeated Princeton's Chris
McLoughlin, 7-5, and Millersville's Greg Eyuon, 5-4. Mike Settembrino
(Lyndhurst, NJ) also notched two wins at 133 defeating
Princeton's Josh Stire, 7-5, and Millersville's Tod McCrudy, 23-8.
Joe Pichetto (Oradell, NJ) defeated Scott Pasova of Princeton,
12-1, and Adam Scharf of Millersville, 5-0 at 174. At 184, Greg
Sawyer (Franklinville, NJ) defeated Princeton's Brian Foster,
10-3, and Millersville's Brian McDonald, 13-7.
On Thursday (Feb. 11), the Pirates dropped a 24-15 decision to George
Mason at Walsh Gym. Paul Wyka (Fairlawn, NJ)
defeated 19th ranked Kevin Brandon, 9-8, at 165. Bautis defeated
Micah Morris at 197 by fall and Benvenuti defeated Ryan
Barden, 7-6 at 141.
NEXT FOR THE PIRATES: Seton Hall returns to action on
Thursday (Feb. 18) when it hosts Columbia at 8:00 p.m. at Walsh
Gym. The Pirates close out the regular season on Saturday (Feb.
20) with at Syracuse with East Stroudsburg and Franklin &
Marshall.
MEN'S & WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK
The Seton Hall University men's and women's track teams each won the
Valentine's Day Invitational held today at the Regan
Fieldhouse. The Pirate women earned eight first place finishes
while the men tallied four.
For the women, freshman Jana Burton (Queens, NY) took first place in
both the shot put and the weight throw with distances of
45'0.0 and 48'2.0 respectively. Fellow freshman Nolle Graham
(Bronx, NY) also won two events, first taking the long jump
with a distance of 5.87 meters and winning the 60-meter dash with a
final time of 7.51 seconds. Sophomore Teneka Horton
(Chicago, IL) won the 400-meter dash crossing the finish line with
a time of 56.67. Sophomore Jarita Dill (Pembroke, Bermuda)
won the 500-meter run with a time of 1:15.34. Junior Lanyka Brown (Metuchen,
NJ) won the 60-meter hurdles with a time of
8.59 seconds. The women's 4x400 meter relay team also took first
place with a time of 3:52.20.
On the men's side, senior Ned Brooks (North Babylon, NY) won the 800-meter
run with a time of 1:49.65. Junior distance runner
David Lawler (Lynnfield, MA) won the 3000-meter run with a time of
9:08.23. Senior Derwin Jones (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad)
won the 500-meter run crossing the finish line at the 1:04.65 mark.
The men's 4x400 meter relay team also finished first with a
time of 3:19.56.
NEXT FOR SETON HALL: The Seton Hall track team will travel
to Syracuse for the BIG EAST Indoor Championships held
at the Carrier Dome on February 20-21.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
The women's tennis team defeated Colgate, 7-0, but lost to Temple,
3-2, on Saturday (Feb. 13-14) at the University of
Pennsylvania Tournament in Philadelphia, PA.
The Pirates swept all matches from Colgate highlighted by a win
from Laura McCracken (Greystokes, Ireland) over Sam Kohn,
6-0, 6-3 at first singles. The doubles team of Pille Arike (Tallinn,
Estonia) and Beth Dugan (Somerset, NJ) defeated Lisa Ongseng
and Kristen Renaldi, 6-1, 6-2 at second doubles.
In the Pirates loss to Temple, Jasmine Wright (Ft. Collins, CO)
was the lone Pirates' singles victor with a 6-2,6-2 win over Nadia
Ramdasa at fourth singles. Evelyn Macko (Longeueil, Canada) and
Judy McAuley (Loughlinstown, Ireland) defeated Tanya
Secic and Nina Kumar, 6-4, 6-4, at third doubles.
NEXT FOR SETON HALL: The Pirates travel to the University
of Pennsylvania Tournament on February 13-14.
MEN'S TENNIS
The men's tennis team competed at the Stony Brook Indoor Invitational
on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 12-13) at Stony Brook,
NY. Two singles players and two doubles teams advanced to the
semi-finals in the Flight A and B brackets.
In Flight A singles, No. 3 tournament seed Alex Militec (Belgrade,
Yugoslavia) win his first round match by default and
advanced to the second round where he defeated Boris Bogdanova of Fairleigh
Dickinson, 6-2, 6-4. He was defeated in the
semi-finals by FDU's Tae Byon, 6-4, 6-4. In Flight B singles,
Mark Vanderelst (Hamilton, Ontario) advanced to the semi-finals by
defeating Kutztown's Jay Ruggerioi, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, but dropped a 6-2,
6-2 decision to J. Kuandt of Bucknell.
In Flight A doubles, the team of Militec and Todd Green (Oakville,
Ontario) earned a first round win over FDU's A. Etchebry
and K. Chubukev, 6-4, 1-6(7-2), but dropped the semi-final match to
S. Bomburger and T. Kelly of Bucknell, 6-0, 6-4. Vanderelst
teamed with Jan Rickel (Bigen, Germany) to defeat Boston College, 6-3,
6-4.
NEXT FOR THE PIRATES: Men's tennis travels to Lehigh
University to take on Lehigh and Towson State on Saturday (Feb.
20). Competition begins at 9:30 a.m.
NAGLE AND DEBENEDICTIS NAMED BIG EAST SCHOLAR-ATHLETE AWARD WINNERS
Women's soccer goalkeeper Stacey Nagle (Macungie, PA) and men's
cross-country athlete Anthony DeBenedictis (Roselle
Park, NJ) have been named 1998-99 BIG EAST/Target Scholar-Athlete Award
winners, as announced by the conference office.
Both student-athletes will received $2,000 towards graduate studies
and were among 24 student-athletes from the conference to
earn the award.
Nagle is a secondary education/mathematics major while DeBenedictis
is majoring in business management information systems.
Nagle closed out her career as the top goalkeeper in Seton Hall's
women's soccer history, owning all of the Pirates' goalkeeping
records, with 536 career saves, 25.5 shutouts and a goals against average
of 1.82. A three-time All-BIG EAST selection, she was
also named to the All-Mid Atlantic Region Third Team twice. She
totaled 115 saves this season, posting a goals against average
of 1.48 with five shutouts, including four in BIG EAST play as the
Pirates went 11-6-1 and earned a national ranking (16th) for the
first time in school history. Nagle recently played in the Umbro
Soccer All-Star Classic in Florida, becoming the first Seton Hall
women's soccer player to be chosen for that contest. She is currently
a member of the women's basketball team, earning a
walk-on position.
DeBenedictis earned All-America honors this year as he placed
43rd in the 1998 NCAA Cross Country Championships in
November. Among his other accomplishments during the 1998 season
was a third place finish at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic
Regional and a third-place finish at the 1998 BIG EAST Championships,
thus earning him All-BIG EAST honors.
DeBenedictis, who took first place at four consecutive invitationals
during the season, is the only Seton Hall runner to ever qualify
for the NCAA Championships. He also competed at the NCAA Cross-Country
Championships in 1996.
