February 8, 1999 Sports Information, 973-761-9493 MEN'S BASKETBALL (11-11, 5-8)
The men's team suffered two BIG EAST Conference losses last week to Boston College, 81-66, and Notre Dame, 76-60. The Pirates' record drops to 11-11 overall and 5-8 in the conference play.
On Tuesday (Feb. 2) the Pirates dropped an 81-66 decision to Boston College at Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill, MA. Junior guard Rimas Kaukenas (Vilnius, Lithuania) scored 24 points on 7-of-12 shooting to lead the Pirates. Junior guard Shaheen Holloway (Queens, NY) added 14 points. Sophomore guard Chuck Moore (Plymouth Meeting, PA) added seven points and three rebounds while sophomore forward Reggie Garrett (Somerset, NJ) pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
The Pirates returned home on Saturday (Feb. 6) and dropped only their second home game of the season to Notre Dame, 76-60. The Pirates played most of the second half without point guard Holloway who suffered a strained neck in a collision with Notre Dame's Phil Hickey. Junior Gary Saunders (New York, NY) led the Pirates with 15 points and also had seven rebounds. Freshman center Charles Manga (Cameroon, Africa) had nine points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Junior Duane Jordan (New York, NY) added six points, eight rebounds, and five blocks, while Kaukenas and Holloway had ten points apiece.
NEXT FOR SETON HALL: The Pirates return to action on Monday (Feb. 8) against Pittsburgh at the Continental Airlines Arena. Game time is 7:30 p.m. and will be televised locally on Comcast's CN8. The Pirates then host Connecticut on Saturday (Feb. 13) at the arena. Game time is 12:00 noon and will be televised locally on WWOR (Channel 9).
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL (5-17, 2-12)
The Pirates dropped two BIG EAST Conference games last week, losing
to Villanova, 68-53, and 6th-ranked Notre Dame, 77-49. Seton Hall's
finished the week with a record of 5-17 overall and 2-12 in the BIG EAST
Conference.
On Tuesday (Feb. 2) the Pirates suffered seventh straight loss dropping
a 68-53 decision to Villanova at The Pavilion, in Villanova, PA.
Sophomore Starr Fuller (Boston, MA) led the Pirates with 18 points on 7-of-10
shooting and eight rebounds. Junior Yolanda Rouse (Clewiston, FL)
had 14 points and freshman guard Naimah Smith (Elizabeth, NJ) added eight
points, five rebounds and three assists for the Pirates.
On Saturday (Feb. 6) the Pirates dropped a 77-49 decision to 6th-ranked
Notre Dame at Joyce Center, Notre Dame, IN. Smith led the Pirates
with 11 points. Fuller had eight points and five rebounds. Junior
Erika Ashmon (Montezuma, GA) and freshman Toronda Hayes (Columbus, OH)
added seven points apiece.
NEXT FOR SETON HALL: The Pirates return to action on
Wednesday (Feb. 10) when they host Pittsburgh at Walsh Gym at 7:30 p.m.
Seton Hall then hosts Providence on Sunday (Feb. 14) at Walsh Gym.
Game time is 2:00 p.m.
MEN'S (5-6) & WOMEN'S (8-4) SWIMMING & DIVING
The Seton Hall University men's and women's swimming and diving teams
defeated Iona College Monday (Feb. 1). The
Pirate women improve their season record to 8-4, while the men improve
to 5-6.
The Seton Hall women defeated Iona by a score of 143-75. The
Pirates were led by junior Jacqueline Labik (Phoenixville, PA), who garnered
victories in the 200-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle with respective
times of 2:08.51 and 5:34.68. Senior Megan Gaffney (West Milford,
NJ) and sophomore Deidre Tillman (Westfield, MA) recorded respective victories
in the 50-yard freestyle (25.53), and 200-yard individual medley (2:22.90).
The Pirate men defeated Iona by a score of 123-98. Senior Rich
Munson (Maplewood, NJ) led the Pirates with victories in the 200-yard freestyle
(1:47.59), and the 100-yard backstroke (52.38). Senior Ioannes Paparsenos
(Athens, Greece) recorded victories in the 500-yard freestyle and 1000-yard
freestyle, with respective times of 4:56.72 and 10:23.31.
NEXT FOR THE PIRATES: The Pirates will return to action
Saturday (Feb. 6), when they travel to LaSalle for a tri-meet with the
University of Connecticut.
WRESTLING (5-8, 4-3 ECWA)
The Pirates suffered a 39-9 defeat to #12 ranked Rider at Walsh Gymnasium
on Sunday (Feb. 7). After the first four
matches, Seton Hall remained close to Rider, trailing just 12-9.
Rider quickly pulled ahead of Seton Hall after winning the final six matches
of the contest.
Dave Ilaria (Jersey City, NJ) and Mark Bautis (Lyndhurst, NJ) were
the lone winners for the Pirates. Ilaria defeated Gerald Limonjelli
in three periods by a score of 9-7. The win marks Ilaria's 19th win,
a team-high. Bautis picked up the win on a forfeit. He advances to
17-13 on the year.
Seton Hall picked up a win and a loss in tri-meet action at Bucknell
on Saturday (Feb.6). The Pirates defeated
Bucknell in the opening match, 28-12, before falling to Buffalo, 27-12
in the second match. Everett Bell (East Rutherford, NJ) opened up
the evening pinning Jason Bellis. The Pirates would go on to win
six of the next nine matches with Bautis and Mike Settenbrino (Lyndhurst,
NJ) picking up major decision victories. Picking up decisions for
Seton Hall were Frank Giordano (Union, NJ), Joe Benventutti (Little Falls,
NJ), and Larry Smashey (Franklin, NJ).
Seton Hall lost its final match of the evening to Buffalo, picking
up only three victories in the contest. Settenbrino and Benvenutti
picked up victories on decisions. Jerry Barry (Woburn, NJ) was the
only other Seton Hall winner pinning Greg Bentley.
NEXT FOR THE PIRATES: Seton Hall returns to action on
Thursday (Feb. 11) when it hosts George Mason at 8:00 p.m. at Walsh Gym.
The Pirates then travel to Princeton on Saturday (Feb. 13) for a 2:00 p.m.
match.
MEN'S & WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK
The men's and women's track teams competed at the Millrose Games at
Madison Square Garden on Friday (Feb. 5).
The Seton Hall men's team had two relay teams competing at the Millrose
Games. The 4x400 team of senior Derwin Jones (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad),
senior Erich Davis (Pennllyn, PA), sophomore Ken Nelson (Port Huron, MI)
and senior Ned Brooks (North Babylon, NY) took second place with a time
of 3:20.47, just seven tenths of a second behind St. John's who finished
at 3:19.77. The 4x800 team of junior Marcel Burke (Albany, NY), freshman
Sheldon Melboure (Kingston, Jamaica), junior James Karanji (Thika, Kenya),
and senior Brad Barket (Dallas, PA) also placed second with a time of 7:45.67.
For the women Erica Broomfield (Markham, Ontario) and Noelle Graham
(Bronx, NY) represented Seton Hall in the 60-meter dash. Broomfield
finished seventh with a time of 7.58 while Graham finished eighth at 7.71.
On Sunday (Feb. 8) the Pirates competed in the Metropolitan Championships
held in New York, NY. The women were led by Broomfield, who took
first place in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.89, and the 200-meter
dash with a time of 23.90. Senior Audrey Griffin (Hollis, NY) won
the 500-meter dash in 1:13.66. Sophomore Jarita Dill (Pembroke, Bermuda)
captured the 800-meter title with a winning time of 2:14.11.
Junior Lanyka Brown (Metuchen, NJ) earned first place in the 55-meter hurdles
in 8.14. Graham won the long jump with a leap of 5.76 meters, and
senior Harriette Gardener (Bayshore, NY) took the triple jump with a distance
of 11.92 meters.
On the men's side Melbourne won the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:03.46
and Karanji took the 800-meter title with a time of 1:50.92.
NEXT FOR SETON HALL: The Pirates host the Seton Hall
Open II on Sunday (Feb. 14) at the Regan Fieldhouse on the Seton Hall campus.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
The Seton Hall women's tennis team was idle last week.
NEXT FOR SETON HALL: The Pirates travel to the University
of Pennsylvania Tournament on February 13-14.
