The baseball team defeated St. Peter's, 31-13 on Thursday (March 18), in Jersey City, to improve its record to 5-5-1. The 31-run output ties a school record set in 1988 when the Pirates scored 31 against Villanova.
Seton Hall exploded for 20 runs in the first four innings, including a 10-run second. The Pirates were led by junior Alfie Critelli (Summit, NJ), who went 4-for-4, including a grand slam and four RBI. He also tripled and scored three runs. Freshman Todd Crawford (Lancaster, PA) was 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI. Sophomore Shawn Tarkington (Peakskill, NY) (1-for-2) homered, drove in four runs and scored three. Freshman Mike Bascom (Ocean Township, NJ) went 3-for-7, scoring four runs and driving in two. Senior Matt Duignan (New York, NY) was the winning pitcher for the Pirates, improving his record to 3-0.
Sophomore Joe Cuervo (Warren, NJ) was selected the New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association's Player of the Week at its first weekly meeting of the season. Cuervo leads the Pirates with a .528 batting average and 15 runs scored over the first 11 games. He went 2-for-3 with four walks and scored six runs in the 31-13 win over St. Peter's.
NEXT FOR THE PIRATES: Seton Hall will travel to Rider on Tuesday (March 23) for a 3:00 p.m. game. The Pirates then host St. Francis-NY on Thursday (March 25) at 3:00 p.m. Pace on Friday (March 26) at 3:00 p.m. Seton Hall opens the BIG EAST season this weekend when it hosts doubleheaders against Boston College on Saturday (March 28) and Georgetown on Sunday (March 29). Both days' matches begin at noon.
SOFTBALL (7-2)
Seton Hall posted a 2-2 record last week, sweeping a doubleheader against
Wagner, 2-1 and 8-3; but dropping two against Monmouth, 4-1 and 4-3.
The Pirates finished the week with a 7-2 record.
On Thursday (March 18), the Pirates defeated Wagner 2-1 and 8-3 in
their home opener. In game one Kerri Kirk (Ramsey, NJ) broke up a scoreless
game in the bottom of the third by singling in Natalie Denning (Manahawkin,
NJ) who had reached with a two-out double. Vickie Lamb (Yorktown
Heights) who was 3-for-3 in the game, followed with a RBI single that scored
Kirk to put the Pirates ahead 2-0. Wagner threatened in the top of
the sixth but Jenn Berghoff's (Milford, NJ) pitching closed the door on
the rally. Berghoff retired the side in order in the seventh to preserve
the 2-1 victory, improving her record to 4-0. In game two the Pirates
scored three runs in the fifth and then four more in the sixth pulling
off an 8-3 comeback victory over Wagner. The Pirates trailed 3-1
in the bottom of the fifth before Kristina Self (Rockaway, NJ) (3-for-3,
3 RBI) tied the score with a two-run double. Tammy Timko (Sparta, NJ) followed
with a double as Self scored to put the Pirates up 4-3. Lamb, Self
and Timko had a single and a RBI apiece in the sixth inning to secure the
8-3 victory. Misty Beaver (Machesney Park, IL) went the distance
for the Pirates allowing eight hits in the contest. Beaver improves
to 3-0 on the year.
Seton Hall dropped a pair of games to Monmouth on Sunday (March 21),
by scores of 4-1 and 4-3, respectively. Berghoff suffered the loss in game
one, allowing five hits while striking out eight. Her record falls
to 4-1 on the season. Seton Hall was led offensively by Timko who was 2-for-3
in the game.
Beaver allowed only three hits and fanned 10 despite suffering a 4-3
loss to the Hawks. Only one of the four runs was earned. Monmouth
took advantage of three Pirate errors in the fifth as they scored two unearned
runs for the victory. Lamb smashed her fourth home run of the season
in the game, while Kim Jackson (Rockaway, NJ) was 2-for-2 with two doubles
to lead Seton Hall offensively.
NEXT FOR THE PIRATES: Seton Hall will host Rider on Thursday
(March 25) for a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Meadowlands Park.
The Pirates then travel to Marist on Saturday (March 27) for a doubleheader
beginning at noon, and then to LaSalle for two games on Sunday (March 28).
First game set to start at 1:00 p.m.
WRESTLING (9-9, 4-3 ECWA)
Freshman Dave Ilaria (Jersey City, NJ) lost to Jeremy Sluyter of East
Stroudsburg in the preliminary round of the NCAA Wrestling Championship
last Thursday (March 18) at Penn State. Sluyter, ranked 15th in the
national defeated Illaria, 8-0, at the 125-lbs weight class. Ilaria moved
on to the consolation round where he lost to Chattanooga's Adrian Tramutola,
15-5. Illaria completed his first season as a Pirate with a 26-13
overall record, 6-1 in the ECWA and 14-7 in dual matches. His 26
wins are team high for the 1998-99 season.
SEASON COMPLETE
MEN'S & WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK
The track team competed at the Auburn Springtime Invitational
in Auburn, AL on Saturday & Sunday (March 20 & 21). The Pirates
had four first-place finishers at the meet, which consisted of individual
results rather than team scoring.
On the women's side, Marissa Defreese (Rahway, NJ) placed first in
the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:37. Jana Burton (Queens, NY)
won both the hammer throw and the shot-put with distances of 37.06 meters
and 13.82 meters, respectively.
For the men, Ned Brooks (North Babylon, NY) won the 1500-meter with
a time of 3:57.08.
Derwin Jones (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad) finished the 400-meter hurdles
with a time of 51.39 earning
him a first-place finish as well.
NEXT FOR SETON HALL: The track team will travel to Raleigh,
NC to compete in the Raleigh Relays on Saturday (March 27).
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Results for the women's tennis matches at West Virginia were
not available. Results will be reported next week.
NEXT FOR SETON HALL: The tennis team will host Lafayette on
Tuesday (March 23) at 2:30 p.m. and Syracuse on Saturday (March 27) at
1:00 p.m. Both matches will be played at the Ivy Hill Tennis Complex.
MEN'S TENNIS
The men's tennis results for the match at Boston College were
unavailable. The results will be reported next week.
NEXT FOR THE PIRATES: The tennis team will travel to Fairfield
on Wednesday (March 24) for a 3:00 p.m. match. The Pirates then move
on to St. John's for an 11:00 a.m. match on Saturday (March 27).
