The baseball team posted a record of 1-4 last week in five BIG EAST contests. The Pirates dropped a 17-10 decision to Rutgers, split a doubleheader with Notre Damelosing 8-7 and winning 9-1and dropped the rubber game of the three-game series, 17-8. They finished the week with a 19-17-1 overall record and 9-10 in the BIG EAST.
On Wednesday (April 21) Seton Hall closed out the season series with Rutgers in Piscataway with a 17-10 loss to the Scarlet Knights. The Pirates won only one of three against Rutgers this season. The Pirates jumped out to an early 3-0 lead taking advantage of two walks, a hit batter, an RBI single by Alfie Critelli (Summit, NJ) and a sacrifice fly by Joe Cuervo (Warren, NJ). Rutgers came back to score five runs in the bottom of the third to take a 5-3 lead. The Scarlet Knights improved their lead to 9-3 in the following inning. John Bravette's (Belleville, NJ) two-run homer in the seventh brought Seton Hall to within three, 9-6. Rutgers answered with four more in the bottom of the seventh with back-to-back doubles and a bloop single extending its lead to 13-6. The Scarlet Knights added four more in the eighth, giving Rutgers a 17-6 advantage. Seton Hall rallied for four runs in the ninth with consecutive singles by Josh Vath (Cedar Grove, NJ) and pinch-hitter Todd Crawford (Lancaster, PA). Ross Petruska (Clifton, NJ) followed with a walk and Bravette singled to drive in a run. Ray Navarette (Morgan Hill, CA) followed with a sacrifice fly to score Crawford. Kevin Leighton (Brewster, NY) then had a pinch-hit single to drive in the Pirates' third run of the inning. The scoring ended for Seton Hall after Bravette scored on a bases loaded walk to Mike Bascom (Ocean Township, NJ) as Rutgers went on for the 17-10 victory. Derek Hurley (Staten Island, NY) suffered the loss allowing six runs on six hits in three innings of work. Hurley drops to 1-5 on the season.
The Pirates traveled to Notre Dame for a three-game weekend series. The Fighting Irish took the first game of Saturday's (April 24) doubleheader, 8-7, with the Pirates winning the nightcap, 9-1. With the score tied 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning of game one, Notre Dame scored three runs off losing pitcher John Probst (Parsippany, NJ) to take a 5-2 advantage. The Pirates countered with two runs in the top of the fifth, but the Irish added three in the bottom of the frame. The Pirates rallied in the top of the seventh with two runs, but fell short as Notre Dame's pitcher John Corbin notched his ninth save of the year. Sophomore Brian Leighton (Brewster, NY) led Seton Hall going 2-for-3, driving in two runs and scoring one. Critelli was 3-for-4 scoring one run and driving in one. Vath was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI. The Pirates rebounded in game two with a 9-1 victory. Cameron Esslinger (South Orange, NJ) pitched the complete game victory, surrendering one run on nine hits, and striking out eight. Esslinger improved his record to 4-2. Brian Leighton went 2-for-5 with a homerun and three RBI for the Pirates. Bravette was 1-for-5 smacking his 15th double on the year. Critelli (1-for-4) drove in two runs with his eighth double of the year.
On Sunday (April 25) Notre Dame took the rubber game of the three-game series, 17-8. Critelli was 3-for-4 including his fourth homerun and ninth double of the season. Critelli also drove in three runs. Damon Ponce De Leon (Demarest, NJ) suffered his first loss of the season for the Pirates.
NEXT FOR THE PIRATES: Seton Hall hosts Rider on Tuesday (April 27) for a 3:00 p.m. game. The Pirates will travel to Siena on Thursday (April 29) for a 4:00 p.m. game. Pittsburgh comes to South Orange for a three game set with a doubleheader on Sunday (May 2) at noon, and a single game on Monday (May 3) at 3:00 p.m.
SOFTBALL (32-4; 10-2)
The Seton Hall softball team posted a perfect 8-0 record last week,
improving its record to 32-4 overall, 10-2 in the BIG EAST. The Pirates
swept doubleheaders from Villanova (4-3, 5-2) and Rutgers (4-3, 12-1),
extending their winning streak to 13 straight games.
On Saturday (April 24), freshman Ali Remakus (Hallstead, PA) hit a
grand slam to break a 1-1
tie in the sixth inning to lead Seton Hall to a 5-2 win over Villanova
in the second game the doubleheader. Trailing 1-0 in the sixth inning,
Jen Rosant (Cliffwood Beach, NJ) singled and reached second on a Villanova
error. Vickie Lamb (Yorktown Hts, NY), the nation's third leading hitter,
then stroked an RBI double to tie the score. After consecutive walks to
Kim Jackson (Rockaway, NJ) and Amy-Lynn Mellin (Petaluma, CA), Remakus,
the designated player, hit the first homerun of her college career giving
the Pirates a 5-1 lead, which proved to be the game-winning hit.
Sophomore Jenn Berghoff (Milford, NJ) was the winning pitcher, tossing
a four-hitter while striking out three Wildcat batters, to improve her
record to 15-2. In the first game, Villanova took the early lead, scoring
two runs in the first inning on a two-run double by Regina Speicher.
Seton Hall tied the game in the second inning when Lamb hit her team-leading
13th homerun of the season. Villanova went ahead, 3-1 in the fourth on
a solo homerun by Gina DeFrancesco. Seton Hall then used a homerun by Mellin,
the first of her career, to pull within, 3-2, in the fifth inning. In the
same inning, Kristina Self (Rockaway, NJ) singled and scored the tying
run on a pinch-hit RBI double by Remakus. Mellin, had the game-winning
hit in the sixth inning, a single which scored Rosant, who led off the
inning with a double. Misty Beaver (Machesney Park, IL) upped her
record to 15-2 as she limited the Wildcats to three hits and struck out
eight batters.
On Sunday (April 24) Lamb hit a three-run homerun to lift Seton
Hall to a 4-3 win over Rutgers in the first game of the doubleheader. The
Pirates also won the second game, 12-1. Seton Hall has now won 13 consecutive
games and is a perfect 18-0 at home. The Pirates' 32 wins mark the most
victories ever by a Seton Hall women's athletic team, topping the 31 wins
by the volleyball team in 1994. Lamb, the nation's third leading hitter,
connected for her 13th homerun of the year in the third inning. The Pirates
began the scoring when Self walked and scored on an RBI single by Kerry
Kirk (Ramsey, NJ). Rosant then reached first on a fielder's choice and
scored with Kirk on Lamb's blast over the leftfield fence. Pitcher Berghoff
improved her record to 16-2. The sophomore had four strikeouts in the victory.
Kirk was 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI for Seton Hall while Lamb was
1-for-2 with one run and three RBI. In the nightcap, the Pirates jumped
to a 5-0 lead in the first inning using five walks and a hit batter by
Rutgers starter Angie Fancuberta. Tammy Timko (Sparta, NJ) and Natalie
Denning (Manahawkin, NJ) each added RBI doubles for the Pirates.
Seton Hall scored five more in the second as Mellin stroked a two-run double
and Timko had an RBI single. Catcher Ryan Barry (Rochester, NY) then hit
her first career homerun, a two-run shot. Pitcher Beaver upped her
record to 16-2 with the win as she struck out three Rutgers batters.
NEXT FOR THE PIRATES: Seton Hall will travel to St. Peter's
for a doubleheader on Tuesday (April 27) beginning at 3:00 p.m. The
Pirates host a doubleheader with Iona on Wednesday (April 28) in their
final home appearance of the season. Seton Hall then travels to Pittsburgh
on Saturday (May 1) and then Notre Dame on Sunday (May 2). Both doubleheaders
begin at 11:00 a.m. EST.
It makres the first time Seton Hall has swept the weekly awards
MEN'S & WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK
The men's and women's track teams competed at the Penn Relays
held Thursday-Sunday (April 22-25).
The women's sprint medley team of Nolle Graham (New York, NY),
Shontee Bryant (Silver Spring, MD), Audrey Griffin (Hollis, NY), and Marissa
Defreese (Rahway, NJ) captured the Championship of America title with a
time of 3:46.52. The women's 4x400 realy team of Lanyka Brown (Metuchen,
NJ), Bryant, Heather Smith (Chicago, IL), and Graham took first place in
the women's ECAC with a time of 3:38.32.
In the men's competition, the 4x800 relay team of James Karanja
(Thika, Kenya), Marcus Burke (Albany, NY), Sheldon Melbourne (Kingston,
Jamaica) and Ned Brooks (North Babylon, NY) placed second in the Championship
of America meet with a time of 7:17.54. The sprint medley relay team
of Erich Davis (Penllyn, PA), Derwin Jones (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad), Ken
Nelson (Port Huron, MI), and Brooks placed 3rd with a time of 3:22.46.
Jones also placed fifth in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 51.31.
Teammate Karanji placed sixth with a time of 51.59.
NEXT FOR SETON HALL: The track team will compete at the BIG
EAST Championships held Saturday-Sunday (May 1-2) at Villanova.
WOMEN'S TENNIS (11-15; 6-3: includes Fall record)
The women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to Boston College
in the second round of the BIG EAST Tennis Championships held Thursday-Sunday
(April 22-25) at the University of Miami. The Pirates advanced to
the second round of competition when they defeated Pittsburgh, 4-0, in
the opening round. The Pirates closed out the 1999 season with a
record of 11-15 overall and 6-3 in the BIG EAST and a fifth place finish
in the tournament.
Seton Hall, which entered the tournament as the sixth-seed, defeated
11th-seed Pittsburgh 4-0 on Thursday (April 22). The Pirates won
the first three singles matches and received a point for winning both doubles
matches, highlighted by junior Laura McCracken (Greystones, Ireland) and
freshman Kylie Lasalle (New Iberia, LA) who defeated Erin Shalbrack and
Lindsay Carlson, 8-2, at first doubles. The duo of Judy McAuley (Loughlinstown,
Ireland) and Pille Arike (Tallinn, Estonia) defeated Sarah Austin and Alison
Bucher, 8-0, at second doubles.
The Pirates dropped a 4-3 decision to Boston College in the second
round of the tournament. The duo of McCracken and Lasalle defeated
Cynthia Tow and Barbara Privrel, 9-8 (4) at first doubles. Arike
and McAuley defeated Kiren Fernando and Mercedes del Valle, 8-3, at second
doubles. McAuley also picked up a win at fifth singles with a 6-0,
6-2 win over Kim Arbuckle. Also winning her singles event was Evelyne
Macko (Longueil, Canada) with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Ruta Veitas.

MEN'S TENNIS (6-17; 0-9: includes Fall record)
The men's tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision to Connecticut in
the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament held Thursday-Sunday (April
22-25) at the University of Miami. The Pirates, who entered the tournament
as the 11th seed also suffered a 4-3 loss to Villanova in the consolation
round of the tournament. Seton Hall closes out the 1999 season with
a 6-17 overall record, 0-9 in the conference.
On Friday (April 23) freshman Alex Militec (Belgrade, Yugoslavia) defeated
Villanova's Robert Waibel, 6-0, 6-1 at first singles. Freshman Jan
Rickel (Bingin, Germany) and sophomore Mark Vanderelst (Hamilton, Ontario)
also picked up singles wins at the second and fourth spots, respectively.

The golf team was idle last week.
