The baseball team posted a record of 3-2 last week. The Pirates swept a doubleheader from BIG EAST rival Georgetown, 7-2 and 12-0; defeated St. John's, 6-5; but dropped a doubleheader at West Virginia, 7-6 and 8-3. The Pirates improved their record to 11-9-1 overall and 4-3 in the BIG EAST.
On Monday (March 29), junior right-hander Cameron Esslinger (South Orange, NJ) hurled seven shutout innings and junior Alfie Critelli (Summit, NJ) went 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBI to lead the Pirates to a 12-0 blanking of Georgetown in game two of the doubleheader at Owen T. Carroll Field. The Pirates captured the first game, 7-2. Esslinger (1-1) cruised through seven innings, allowing only two hits and striking out nine. In game one, reliever John Probst (Parsippany, NJ) picked up his second win in two days with 2.1 innings of shutout relief. Starter Derek Hurley (Staten Island, NY) went 4.2 innings in his game one start allowing two runs on two hits. Seton Hall pitchers allowed only five total hits in the two games. Critelli hit a solo home run in his first at bat in the second inning. He would add RBI singles in the fifth and seventh innings and finished 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Junior Ray Navarrete (Morgan Hill, CA) was a combined 3-for-6 with four RBI in the doubleheader, including a solo homer in game two. The Pirates combined for 29 hits in the two games, with a 17-hit barrage in the 12-0 win. Freshmen Mike Bascom (Ocean Township, NJ) and Jeff Miller (West Orange, NJ) were each 3-for-5 in the second game. Sophomores Kevin Leighton (Brewster, NY) (2-for-3, 2 RBI) and Brian Leighton (Brewster, NY) (2-for-4) led the offensive attack for the Pirates in game one.
On Thursday (April 1), the Pirates defeated St. John's, 6-5, in extra innings. Trailing 5-0 in the top of the sixth of a scheduled seven inning game, Seton Hall scored one run off Brian McGee's (Marlton, NJ) RBI single. The Pirates' four-run seventh inning tied the score and forced the extra innings, highlighted by Kevin Leighton's 2-run double. Brian Leighton's RBI single in the top of the ninth proved to be the winning run. Probst pitched the final three innings, holding the Red Storm hitless and surrendering only one walk. The second game of the doubleheader was postponed due to rain.
The Pirates dropped a doubleheader to West Virginia, 7-6 and 8-3, on Saturday (April 3). Seton Hall's seventh inning rally fell short as the Pirates scored six runs on four hits, highlighted by Brian Leighton's two-run double. Senior Matt Duignan (New York, NY) suffered the loss for the Pirates. In game two, Esslinger took the 8-3 loss for the Pirates, surrendering four runs on four hits in 6.1 innings.
NEXT FOR THE PIRATES: Seton Hall begins a five-game road trip at Rutgers for a 3:00 p.m. game on Wednesday (April 7). The Pirates then move on to Monmouth on Thursday (April 8) for a 3:00 p.m. Villanova hosts the Pirates with a noon doubleheader on Saturday (April 10) and a single game on Sunday (April 11)
SOFTBALL (17-2; 2-0)
The Seton Hall softball team posted a 4-0 record last week, including
a sweep of BIG EAST rival St. John's. The Pirates extend their winning
streak to 10 straight games and improve their record to 17-2 overall and
2-0 in the BIG EAST.
On Saturday (April 3), Seton Hall swept a pair of games in its BIG
EAST opener against St. John's at Cameron Field. The Pirates squeaked
by the Red Storm 2-0 in game one and came back with a 10-0 win in game
two. Misty Beaver (Machesney Park, IL) was two outs away from a five-inning
perfect game before allowing a single up the middle to break it up in the
Pirates' 10-0 win. Beaver retired 15 of the 16 batters she faced,
striking out seven on the day. She improved her record to 9-1 on
the year and 1-0 in the conference, and picked up her third shut out of
the season. The Pirates jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the first
beginning with a Natalie Denning (Manahawkin, NJ) single to open the inning.
Shye Nakabayashi (Irvine, CA) followed with a walk and Jen Rosant (Old
Bridge, NJ) drove in the first two runs of the game on a double down the
left field line. Vickie Lamb (Yorktown Heights, NY) (3-for-3; 2 HR's;
4 RBI) continued the hit parade for Seton Hall singling in Rosant.
Amy Lynn Mellin (Petaluma, CA) drove in a run with a single and later scored
when Denning hit her second single of the inning. Seton Hall added
three more in the second with back-to-back home runs by Lamb and Kim Jackson
(Rockaway, NJ). Lamb's homer was a two-run shot that drove in Rosant
who began the inning with a walk. Lamb opened up the fourth inning with
a solo home run, her second of the game, to wrap up the scoring for the
Pirates. Jenn Berghoff (Milford, NJ) was the winning pitcher in game one,
allowing just three hits in her second shut out of the year. Berghoff
improves to 8-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
On Tuesday (March 30) Seton Hall swept a twinbill from Lafayette, 9-1
and 10-0. The Pirates collected 14 hits in each of the wins, which were
five inning games due to the eight-run rule. The Pirates erupted
for five runs in the third inning of the first game when Rosant and Lamb
hit back-to-back homeruns. Tammy Timko (Sparta, NJ), who homered
in the second inning, followed with a triple and was driven in by Kristina
Self's (Rockaway, NJ) single. Jackson ended the rally with a home
run, the third of the inning. Seton Hall ended the game in the fifth
inning after Denning singled in Nakabayashi, who had reached on a bunt
single. Timko was 3-for-3 (double, triple, home run) in the game
with a RBI and two runs scored. Rosant was also perfect at the plate,
going 3-for-3 with a RBI. Berghoff picked up the victory improving
to 7-1 on the year. Berghoff allowed five hits in the game. Sophomores
Beaver and Jill LaFlam (Gloucester, MA) combined for a no-hitter in the
10-0 victory. Beaver improved to 8-1 on the year and currently has
a 0.84 ERA.
NEXT FOR THE PIRATES: Seton Hall begins a six-game road trip
at Fordham on Tuesday (April 6) with a 5:00 p.m. doubleheader. The
Pirates then travel to Connecticut on Saturday (April 10) for a noon doubleheader.
Boston College plays host to the Pirates on Sunday (April 11) with a noon
doubleheader.

MEN'S & WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK
The men's and women's track teams each placed first at the Colonial
Relays held at the College of William & Mary on Saturday (April 3).
The men's 4x400 relay team, comprised of James Karanja (Thika, Kenya),
Derwin Jones (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad), Ken Nelson (Port Huron, MI) and
Erich Davis (Penllyn, PA) took first place with a time of 3:11.19.
The 4x800 team of Sheldon Melbourne (Kingston, Jamaica), Marcel Burke (Albany,
NY) Karanja and Ned Brooks (North Babylon, NY) also finished with the top
time of 7:28.03.
On the women's side, Debbie Robertson (Bedford, MA) placed first in
the 3,000 meter run with t time of 11:41.80. Charmaine Schmidt (Washington,
DC) won the 400-meter low hurdles with a time of 63.04. Harriet Gardner
(Bayshore, NY) captured the triple jump with a mark of 12.66 meters.
NEXT FOR SETON HALL: The track team will compete at the Sea
Ray Relays in Knoxville, TN on Friday & Saturday (April 9 & 10).
WOMEN'S TENNIS
The women's tennis team earned its first BIG EAST win of the
season, defeating Rutgers, 9-0, on Tuesday (March 30). Seton Hall
improves to 5-12 overall, 1-2 in the BIG EAST.
Junior Laura McCracken (Greystones, Ireland) helped the Pirates to
victory by defeating Donna Krouzman, 6-1, 6-1, at first singles.
Sophomore Pille Arike (Tallinn, Estonia) and freshman Kyli Lasalle (New
Iberia, LA) also gave the Pirates victories at second and third singles.
The duo of Lasalle and McCracken also earned a hard-fought win at first
doubles over Beth O'Donnell and Lara Manoukian, 9-8(6).
NEXT FOR SETON HALL: The Pirates travel to Rutgers on Tuesday
(March 30) for a 1:00 p.m. match. On Thursday (Apr. 1) the Pirates
will be at Princeton.
MEN'S TENNIS
The men's tennis dropped a 5-2 decision to Villanova on Saturday
(April 3) at the Ivy Hill Tennis Complex. The Pirates' record drops
to 5-9 overall and 0-1 in the BIG EAST.
The Pirates captured the top two singles events with Alex Miletic
(Belgrad, Yugoslavia) defeating Robert Waibel, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 singles.
Mark Vanderelst (Hamilton, Ontario) defeated Stephen Smith, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1.
NEXT FOR THE PIRATES: The tennis team will travel to Fairfield
on Wednesday (March 24) for a 3:00 p.m. match. The Pirates then move
on to St. John's for an 11:00 a.m. match on Saturday (March 27).
GOLF
The golf team finished in seventh place at the Pepsi Intercollegiate
at Bradford Creek Golf Club in Greenville, NC held Saturday (March 20).
The Pirates were led by Mike Costigan (London, Ontario) who placed
in an eighth place tie, with a three-round tournament score of a par 216
(73-71-72). Sophomore Eugene Smith (Glen Ridge, NJ) finished tied
for 15th place by shooting a 70 on the final day of action to finish at
219 (73-76-70).
NEXT FOR THE PIRATES: The golf team travels to the Navy Invitational
on Saturday-Sunday (April 10-11).
